Acme Grocery Chain Sold

The brand has a strong presence in Delaware County, but its future is uncertain.

Acme Markets, which operates two grocery stores in the greater Media area, is among several chains the Supervalu company has sold to investment consortium Cerberus Capital Management, Supervalu announced Thursday.

There was no announcement from Supervalu or Cerberus about how the sale will affect the future of the grocery stores.

But the Acme name will remain in place, according to the Delaware County Daily Times. The name and brand have a strong value, a spokesperson told the Times.

There are eight Delaware County Acme stores, including a store near Granite Run and along Baltimore Avenue in Media. At the Bala Cynwyd store a shopper won $1 million last year.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported in July that moves by Supervalu executives seemed to indicate they were looking for buyers for Acme and their other grocery "banners".

Did you ever go to the Giant in Springfield? its a world of difference... the people who work at Acme have such as attitude. the vendors dont even like doing business w/ Acme.... Lets hope Ceribus/Albertson's LLC closes or sells most of the stores and put them out of their misery

I'll admit that Giant's entry into this area has had a solid impact on stalwart Acme, but at the same time major positive credit should go to Granite Run's new manager Debbie Carlucci, who has, for the past many months, been spearheading her team to bring that store back up to its prime again.

Acme is the market leader for the highest retails, worse selection and very bad employee attitude's. The manager at any Acme can only do so much... History shows when Alberstsons LLC purchases stores, they close most of them and sell off the real estate. Ahold and Weis are still activley looking for additional locations in the Delaware Valley Market.

According to Philly.Com, the new owner-investors of ACME will make their money through selling all the real estate and leases, just like Genuardi's. Maria's sources have Weis taking Media, while granite Run may have a problem being sold, because of a new mega-Wegmans to be built soon in Concordville. Collins ShopRite is very interested in Clifton Heights next to Home Depot for quality groceries priced RITE!!
