Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeats Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice presidential running mate, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan.

NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you."

The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy.

The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges from both candidates. After a weak performance after the Republican convention, Romney surged following Obama’s listless performance in the first presidential debate. Nevertheless, the president cemented a lead in battleground states heading into Tuesday’s election.

Pennsylvania was one of the earliest swing states to be called for Obama, who spent little time and money campaigning here. Romney made a last-minute push in the Keystone State with a rally in Bucks County on Sunday and visits Monday by surrogate Rudy Giuliani.

Election Day across eastern Pennsylvania was marked by heavy voter turnout and problems at several polling places.

Along with Obama, Pennsylvania's U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Scranton, won re-election, defeating Tea Party Republican Tom Smith, a coal magnate from the western part of the state.

"Reaganite," he still has to finish clening up after Bush/Cheney/Reagan.

DID YOU KNOW......before British Petroleum had begun to seal the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, Obama mandated they set aside $200 MILLION, towards costs. The commercials you've seen to lure tourists back, he also mandated!

The Exxon "Valdez" disaster off Alaska, 'til BP, the largest oil spill, NEVER WOULD HAVE HAPPENED if Reagan hadn't cut back the state-of-the-art monitoring station their. Underwater shawls & narrow passageways make shipping extremely dificult for tankers.

Despite BEGGING for the Coast Guard Commandant, Reagan cut the station from 9 to 5 men, per shift. It was really Reagan, NOT EXXON, that caused that. Remember thousands swarming to Alaska, to try to save her wildlife, washing off little ducklings as they fought in a sea of oil for their lives.

I knew we'd find some apologist who was still blaming everything on W. But this guy is blaming stuff on REAGAN! And the Valdez! The reasons for the spill were many, but absolutely NO experts blame it on the want for a monitoring station. That would have been merely a mitigating factor... you're essentially blaming a car accident on the lack of seat belts.

When the President uses the word rvenge in the voting process it is hard to respect him as a presidential person. He is not basicly a nice person. He is mean spirited and insulting to anyone he thinks is beneath him. That is basicly everyone in his mind. How so manner like" If you have a small business you didn't build it . Some one else did it for you. " While these business owners put their heart, soul and money building their businesses he tries to take away their spirit. He is a nasty man. Why do people like him? I had a wonderful husband who was always so suportive in compimenting people for their hard work in acomlishing everything they did and everyone loved him. i'm no used to anyone insulting people who have worked hard to achieve somethin. Is this our new era of downgrading people to be popular? What has happened to our country divided by hate and insults and name calling by the president and Speaker of the House calliong Romney a murdere. Have we lost ouir dignity and decency to win and become poular. What kind of children are we going to have if these are the role models/ How disd we sink so low? It is Obama NO Care

there iss only one main reason that Obama won and that is the mainstream media.
they protect his everymood from the public and nothing nagative is allowed to get out. The lies are overlooke because they keep slipping through and are never challenged Th e only reason he loses votes is the people who get the truth on fox news or use their own common sense each time he lies. The intelligent people notice that everything he accused Romney of he was guilty of. Until we form some kind of organization to expose main stream media for covering up for him or demand they tell all the news he will run the sinking ship. Any other reasdons he won are small potatos compare to histeflon coating and the lack of individual resposibility on behalf of the voters to recognize the truth . This is the worst politician in history for lying outside of Clinton who is no match for Obama. D'Elayne Coleman

It is now time for everyone to work togather for the common good of all our citizens! Tony, I really hope you have a job next year, too. However, if you try hard and do your best work, you shouldn't have to worry about being laid off. Companies don't usually lay off their top employees. I also hope your kids find meaningful jobs. If they don't, they should have picked different majors. This financial crisis has been happening for years, so if they picked majors with poor job outlooks, it's their own fault. They should have known better and planned accordingly.

Peter, I'm not a clown or an emotional liberal.

D'Elayne, there is hope for the future. Obama is not an evil man and isn't trying to turn the country against itself. The country has always been divided on certain issues. When I said equality, I was not talking about the economy or business. I was referring to equality for women and the LGBT community. I'm straight, but I hope for a future where you can be with the one you love regardless of his/her sex. I also long for a future where a woman can decide what happens to her body. No one else should be able to make that decision for her. Based on your name, I'm assuming you're female. I honestly don't know how women voted for Romney. I guess you just don't care about the fate of our sex. One last thing, why would I ever listen to Dr. Krauthammer, especially since he works for Fox News?

Yesterday. BO sounded like a Republican, claiming that he would work to bring both sides of the isle together. Personally I don't believe that a leopard can change its spots. So I think in the end we have to resign ourselves that nothing will get done, and we probably will be watching the middle east go up in flames. But what the heck, the people have spoken. 51% of Americans have no pride, they have aligned themselves with abortionists and homosexuals. The rest of us don't matter.

"51% of Americans have no pride, they have aligned themselves with abortionists and homosexuals. The rest of us don't matter." Can someone please tell me what the problem with supporting abortions or gay rights is? Please give me a valid argument against them that does not involve religion. And no, Tony, since you’re a guy, your opinion on abortions really shouldn’t matter. Getting an abortion is a WOMAN’s choice, not a man’s. Let me ask you a hypothetical question: if your daughter or wife was brutally raped and ended up getting pregnant, would you force her to have the baby, knowing that every day for the rest of her life she would be reminded of the great trauma she endured? If so, why?

Stephen, smoking inequality? If you smoke and get cancer or emphysema, it’s your own damn fault, so don’t start complaining about equality for smokers. I have no sympathy for you.

Mary, I'm having a hard time believing that your husband owns a business, because of your comment on his employees and double premiums. Clearly, you have no idea what you are talking about, because if he already has an insurance program nothing changes. If he did tell employees they had to pay "double" then he has decided that he doesn't want to insure his own employees. If that is the case then he is not a very good employer. Apparently, you have also failed to read what real economic professionals have said about the "Obamacare" with respect to the projected financial positives for our country.

Further, no one is talking about raising taxes on the financially wealthy. The fact is that those tax cuts (the Bush tax cuts) were and are temporary. Technically, that is not raising taxes and never should have been viewed as permanent.

You really need to turn off hate radio and learn that just because Fox puts the word news behind the word Fox doesn't actually mean they are reporting real news. Most of the time they are making up opinions on one show and then self reporting their opinions as "news".... that is not real news.

, we own it. I pretended to be interested and on there side and asked them "How have you accomplished this? They said "It was easy , they allow everyone in to do as they please. We have cells all over the country and people welcome us and allow us to do what ever we want. The people don't care about protecting their country. . Now is the final act. Obama is a Muslim. He runs down America to the Muslim countries. He apologizes for us that we have not acted properly or words to that effect. He stood by and allowed 4 americans to be murdered and did nothing to help them. He didn't wear his wedding ring for all the weeks of Romadon when the Muslims wear no jewelry. When confronted he Said "My wedding ring is being repaired. ' For seven weeks and he is President? These are the silly lying replies he gives when cpnfronted about anything. Now the Muslims with their cells all over here have their leader in place. We need Nietzsche . "God is Indeed dead" Half of the people are like The people in Germany when Hitler lead them down a primrose path.

Mary I know that you're Krushed because Obama has 4 more years. The Repubicans spent Obama'a first four yrs fighting him on every issue. Nothing got done, not from lack of trying on the Presidents part. SCOTUS some members were openly critical(which was a first for any president) Joe Walsh said he Lied in a State of the Union Address which also was a first for anyone to openly challenge the president. Do you know that in some other countries it called Treason to do such a thing to your Elected and Slected Leader, It show a sign of total Disrespect for the Office of the Presidency. And I cannot leave out, the Minority Leader of the Senate on day one stated "our major goal is to make B O a one term president. Anyway you see what the American People said on 11/06/2012. Where is your sense of right and wrong:;because you are an ideologue?. You deserve everything you are going to get with this do nothing, lying man in the White House. I hate to even call such a characterless human being a man. The main stream Media protects him from the public. Wright that are directly different in his relationships with him. One is before election and one is after his election . Both designed to manipulate the peoples support. Are you so stupid you ignore the lies you could hear in his own words. If he killed with a gun in his hand yuo'd blame it on someone else. You have many ignorant people out there who are just as rigid and ignorant as you. Dictators control their subjects .. I think folks forget that Obama is not the reason for this bad economy. It s more the result of big business outsourcing hundreds of thousands of jobs as we have seen with the Walmart cheap labor model. This started years ago and has now culminated in this economy. So to blame him for the US corporations decision to outsource and the US' desire for cheaper goods us unfair. Obama considers all people. Romney ran a strong election ...just NOT strong enough.

Then when he as a self proclaimed champion of business tripled down on the massive lie about Jeep, which could have been very damaging to that auto manufacturing company, had they not taken him to the woodshed on that lie as well as all the papers and fact checkers.

Clearly, authenticity, facts, the true American spirit of raising ourselves up, building and investing in our own country, and embracing equality, freedom, and liberty for all Americans won the day.

I voted for Romney. I am an optimist at heart and hope things work out. I am old enough to remember Watergate, I was working for McGovern at the time. Watergate happened before the election and was swept under the rug as sour grapes and treated as rantings of a losing campaign. We all know what happened with that.

What happened in Libya to four Americans is a similar vein. Not with how it was handled was illegal, but certainly exhibits incompetence and a willingness to cover up the truth for political gain.

All Americans love this country and I just pray that we can do some of things we need to do to get our economy moving and not leave future generations mountains of debt and minimum wage jobs.

The USA, where I can get a $100 fine for NOT wearing my seatbelt..but if I decide that I want to stop the beating heart of an innocent child for no reason at all...I can legally go to Planned parenthood, get a legal abortion paid for by you good tax payers..and mom and dad are NOT allowed to know. Great country!! Yes, later I will regret it & be depressed & angry but then I will not be fit to work & will sign up for welfare since then I can always still work under the table and make sure that I get the free cell phone too! Seriously people....the fact that God has allowed this is similar to the fact that God also allowed Hitler, Stalin, Fidel Castro.....just because someone is elected does not exactly mean that all is well between that country and God. I will be praying for ALL in office who are pro-abortion to change their mind. My hope is not in a leader, but in God. The fact is though that even Jesus went into the temple and started knocking over tables and yelling. So here is the thing....sometimes it is appropriate to be angy at what is going on. The BLOOD of those innocent children is on ALL of you who voted for any politician who outright tells you they are PRO-abortion. You have told the young people of our country that killing innocent babies is moral...that is why it is legal. If it was wrong they know that it would be illegal. It is not "hate" when you are not agreeing. God cannot bless the death of babies. God created marriage between a man & a woman. Period.

God does NOT bless abortion. God allowed Hitler, Stalin & Fidel Castro to name a few. God is judging us by allowing this. This is a judgment....how do I know?
The LEGAL killing of the unborn. The LEGAL union of 2 of the same kind. The Bible calls this an abomination. Look up the word abomination. Yes we hate the sin and love the sinner....I love people and pray for them... but do not say Jesus would EVER EVER want someone in office who thinks that it is legal and moral to kill the unborn OR have same sex unions. Please pray about this because even though there are repubs that you personally do not like....please do not think in ANY way shape or form that Jesus could want this. It is a judgement on the USA.

In what terms do you speak of his first term being a disappointment? You have a Senator openly say "our main job is to make obama a one term president" At that point the American people shoud've asked for his resignation. The Sen. job is to work for the American People, not the Republican Pary only. The House of Rep's and the Senate, and the president fail us. So it was a disappointme in terms of no one was willing to do the people work and Govern the USA. Let's' hope someone is really the adult in the room and get things done.

Obama won, ok?
Why not grow up and stop carping and back-biting, it hasn't been 1 day and already the same know-it-all jerks that were claiming Romney had it in the bag and would win, were proven totally wrong so admit you were wrong.
But of course they haven't missed a beat and are still spouting the same poisonous crap ....give it up already.
Stop with the constant harping and whining.
We are Americans,
If you love this country then show it, pull together...all of us are Americans together.
We have re-elected our current President. Respect the office, respect the man, respect the country, respect Democracy.
This blog has become one long bitch-fest for Republicans and Right-winger's that just don't know when to say enough already!
They were wrong on the election outcome, they mis-represent the President's position, they supported a man who ran the most dishonest campaign I can remember...
Obama won the popular vote and state-by-state electoral college...respect the process!
To all the nasty, carping, petty, misleading posters out here...ask yourself if your negative attitude might not be a big part of what's wrong in this country...
Your attitude and approach are creating the very situation you are complaining about so grow up, admit you were wrong and start being a good American, instead of a petty partisan interest group.
If you really love America...then act like a true American and support the democratically and duly elected leader of America.

I am an independent who leans toward Republican. I didn't vote for Obama in 2008, I didn't vote for Romney in 2012 because I did not agree with his plan, or the recent path the Republican party has taken. It had nothing to do with Obama phones, I pay for my own phone, gas because I know a sitting President has no impact on gas prices, mortgages because I just refinanced my mortgae to a 15 year loan knocking off 20 years, nor skin color as I am a white male. Thanks for generalizing about a group of people though.

I think the bottom line is there are less taxpayers in this country than those getting money from the govt. in one way or another. This is a recipe for a continued downward slide. I am not talking about seniors. They should be helped. I think people who have worked hard and pay their taxes amd people who have served our country in the military, eg Vietnam Vets, feel used. Nobody helped us. We did it on our own through hard work and honesty. That incentive has been removed from our country. That incentive is what built our country. Without the incentive our country will continue its downward slide.

What our government has to do is cut spending. If not the downward slide gets steeper. Based on the last four years, it is reasonable to predict spending will increase greatly. Romney would have put a stop to this culture of Gimme that our previous poster is fed up with. So now what do we do? We watch the downward slide for another 4 years. But this country is running out of time to turn the debt problem around. It may be too late after another 4 years of total wasteful spending putting more good money into areas that reap nothing back but more waste.

Romney's big ideas to cut spending were to defund PBS and planned parenthood; hardly a savings. Our biggest "expenses" aren't entitlements or even the military, tho there is fair reason to pursue trimming and efficiencies. Rather, it's lost opportunities, a lack of investment in our citizens, and a system that favors an affluent minority. If we're really interested in cutting spending, we should end the war on drugs and dismantle the prison industrial complex. If we're really interested in revenue building, we need to strengthen education and invest in real domestic manufacturing. Abolishing the bush era taxcuts is more an issue of fairness and prudence. Taxcuts to the affluent in the effort to create jobs has been proven to be a failure. Beyond that, it's up to us citizens to reinvest in ourselves by being more aware of how we use our money, what purchases we make and where those products and services we use come from. Buy American. Buy local.

@DPB- actually, I was discussing spending. The war on drugs is a massive expense, both in financial and human costs. We incarcerate more people than any other country on earth. We limit peoples opportunities by saddling them with a stigma due to a habit. Then we are forced to cradle them cuz of that lost opportunity. My other comments were about revenue building. Investing in education and domestic manufacturing has real ROI, unlike the bush era tax cuts. My final comment was also in the vein of revenue building. Spend your money on America, not China. There is no way we'll get out of the hole just by cutting what are deemed non essential programs. There's just not enough fat there. And if you get rid of medicare, medicade, and social security you'll end up with an even bigger more costly problem. No one wants to do business in a community where homeless people are dying in the gutter. Again, we spend massive resources on the war on drugs with absolutely no return on that investment. We should have learned that from our first attempt at prohibition.

The goose that lays the golden egg ( our country) is almost dead because extravagant, wasteful government spending is more than the hard working TAXPAYERS can support. The taxpayers are fed up supporting the " takers". BTW, how much taxpayer money will pay for the upcoming lavish victory parties at the White House for all of The President's rich Hollywood supporters who will get to sleep overnight ? @DPB- if you believe that unchecked spending is the issue, then I gave you an example of a source for savings. Really tho what you wanna hear is that we're going to punish the "takers" and that that is going to curb our debt. That's based on the false premise that there is a massive amount of the population "taking". That simply isn't true. Sure Romney said 47% don't pay federal income taxes, but those people are hardly "takers". Most are the working poor, the elderly, the disabled and veterans. The percentage of those actually "gaming" the system is closer to 10% or less. Even if you could remove them from the system to fend for themselves, you really don't end up saving massive amounts. If you're really concerned about those "gaming" the system, you might want to look into how wealth is being siphoned out of the populace by those at the top as they create institutional structures that allow them that benefit.

That's right DPB we do not need to continue to subsidize multi-billion dollar corporations with tax payer money a.k.a. Tax breaks should only go to those that are setting up manufacturing companies in the United States of America. - We need to close all loopholes that allow companies etc. to legally dodge paying their taxes like the rest of us patriotic Americans and anyone that stashes money in the Caymans etc. need to be given a one month grace period to move their money back to the States, before they are fined for every month that they continue to un-patriotically stash their money outside of the United States of America.

What will you do now? Will you continue with the politics of division, hate, racism, and anger or will you stand behind our duely elected President to address the problems our nation faces?

Man, the 'get revenge' line was, in context, about NOT being divisive. I suppose you could choose to take it out of context, like the 'you didn't build that' farce earlier this year, but that's up to you.

Peter, in context, Obama mentions Romney in a stump speech. The audience begins booing when they hear his name, and Obama says "No, no, no, Don't boo. Vote. Vote. Voting is the best revenge." And returns to his speech

If you aren't seeing that clearly as 'Stop, don't be petty about this. If you want to make a point, do it with your ballot,' I don't know what to tell you. This just one of hundreds of out-of-context talking points that the conservative pundits have tried to leverage into something over the campaign season, and it speaks volumes about the intellectual resilience of this country that this sort of tactic has failed yet again.

i'm still waiting for the part where you tell what what the correct context is. the quote you displayed is exactly how i remember hearing it. he suggested people vote to get revenge...not for the betterment of the country, not to help other people...to get revenge. he didn't say "don't be petty about this". he said "revenge". oh, boy, i see it now...he's using revenge to bring people together!

Uh, clearly the 'No no no, don't boo' part? You could level divisiveness at the people booing at the rally, sure, but Obama was mitigating that response in the 'living well is the best revenge' sense. I mean, obviously.

I have been reading the comments posted and there does not seem to be any outrage over the whole election process. Obama will be president for the next four years and nothing can be done to change that fact. My problem is with the system currently in place and now would be a good time to start to change the process before 2016. Obscene amounts of money (the estimate for the presidential election alone is 2.5 billion) are being raised and spent on political campaigns. An idea would be that each category of office have a dollar cap that can be spent - doing this would achieve 2 goals. It would level the playing field for all candidates and also make them fiscally responsible for a finite amount of spending. Hopefully by enacting a spending cap the incumbents would not spend the 2nd half of their terms at fundraising events instead of actually doing the work they were elected to do. People spend an inordinate amount of time on social media and we do have the power to change things. Instead of bickering back and forth why not try to come up with the ideas of the changes we would like to see and work toward that goal.

VMH has a good idea. To take it one step further I would propose using tax dollars to fund the campaigns as well. Now that may not be the best idea, but it would eliminate candidates getting money from corporations who will then ask for favors.
My 2 Cents, any boom to the economy due to the election is a short term boom, and doesn't help in the long run. It only benefits a small portion of the workforce as well. With the lower limit on spending the candidates may actually spend the money to tell the voters what they are going to do to make a change instead of the often misleading ads you see these days, like taking a quote completely out of the context it was stated in to bash the other side.

The problem, of course, is that you end up asking the people who depend on the system to pass laws to end it. When office holders depend on PACs, SuperPACs and billionaires to keep their seats, they're just not going to turn their backs on these sugar daddies and shut down the money machine.

Now, can voters change that? Sure. But you have to vote these guys of office. And by reelecting candidates like Gerlach, Fitzpatrick, and Meehan to Congress, and somebody like Mike Vereb to the State House, you just perpetuate this. (Want some interesting reading? Take a look at Vereb's financial disclosure form - he is like a special-interest ATM.)

Do you want to get rid of this campaign money monster? Offer a two-part pledge to every single candidate: 1) I will not accept any campaign contributions other than those that are allowed by law from individuals, and I will not endorse any advertising on my behalf by any outside PAC or organization; and 2) If elected, I will sponsor and vote for any bill that limits campaign finances in this way.

That just might work. But it would take a massive bipartisan effort, and we all know how that plays out.

It has been the Republican goal to objectify people as "others." You could see it with the handling of Romney. When did we most hear about Romney was a Mormon? It was during the Republican primaries. Even if it was the repeated "Oh, the fact that he is a MORMON doesn't bother me;" it meant constantly making sure that his religion was at the front of every discussion, almost like a backhanded compliment; keeping it out there as a dog whistle because they knew that it struck a chord in the base.

Then when the national election was between Obama and Romney, the mention of his religion was rarely ever heard about again. What you mainly saw from Republicans were these same portrayals of Obama as some sort of "other." Actually, not even a singular "other," but objectifying him as some other religion, some other nationality, some other completely different political philosophy, etc. This is the strongest tool that the Republican party has to fight their political races and to divide the country by compartmentalizing people into these groups with varying and conflicting (and mostly fictitious) agendas.

For anybody who was spewing such vile rhetoric on sites like Patch, at family picnics or at the local pub, no matter the greater good that you perceived and used to justify it in your head, I think that today is a day for looking in the mirror as the whole Republican party ought to be doing right now. Yesterday, this great nation overwhelmingly rejected that way of thinking.

Congratulations to all those candidates who won their election.

I am a little disappointed in the results as it makes me question America's future if voters truly do not pay attention to facts and vote strictly by party or race or demographic

Democrats were all too quick to want to blame President Bush for any issue. Gas prices high? It's Bushes fault. War in Iraq? Bushes fault. The national debt? Bushes fault. Well what does it say to them when gas prices on average have been higher? When we still have troops in Iraq and now Afghanistan and more troops being moved into the middle east in anticipation of an Israel - Iran conflict? What about unemployment being worse? Bush was horrible because he racked up 10 trillion in debt in 8 years. What does it say when Obama is over 6 trillion in less than 4 full years.

I have worked the polls for the past 10 years and it's discouraging. The same people who wouldn't know the issues from what TV show premiered come out in masses for presidential elections yet never come to a primary or off election year.

I truly hope Obama has a plan this time and has learned from his first four years because if he repeats the first four years this country is going to be in a hole that we will never be able to climb out of

I can't imagine any fact-based voter finds the price of gas remotely relevant to their decision, much less doubts that the Recession was tied directly to the Bush administration's policies. It's easy to dismiss your political opponents as blind followers or truth-ignorers, but this election, more than any of my lifetime, demonstrated the ability of Information Age voters to see right through phony 'scandals' and easily fact check intentionally misleading figures and claims.

Ah, now I have a very good answer for that. The prison industrial complex is a growth industry. More prisoners, more privatization, more profit! That's the dirty little secret nobody wants to talk about. We hear lip service about being tough on crime and how much it costs to keep an American behind bars, but the private prison industry has a large, well funded and powerful lobby. Even the phone calls coming out of the county jails now are handled through a private company and cost double what a collect call from any regular phone provider would.

I know a lot of people think that the free market is the answer to everything and that the more things are privatized the more efficiently they will be run, but when it comes to our penal system that has not turned out to be the case. There is less oversight, they are often more costly to operate with lesser quality food and services than a state run facility and they operate sweatshops. That's unfair competition when they can pay an inmate between 23 cents and a dollar fifteen cents an hour. The war on drugs delivers Unicor (Unicor is operating on a Federal level and has preferential status with the Pentgon, but this happens at the state level too) and others of their ilk a steady slave workforce.

The fiscal dilemma we face is the responsibility of both parties. GWB was a huge spender while Obama makes him look frugal and those who believe Romney or Obama are the panacea to jobs and wealth creation are delusional. To the chagrin of many of the misinformed, wealth creation in this country has been on the backs of Carnegie, Gates, Gordon Moore,,,etc...ever think how many businesses have stemmed from Microsoft alone? Punitive actions in the form of higher taxes or increased regulation against those "evil 1%er's" simply redistributes wealth and does nothing to increase the size of the pie. One only needs to look at Europe as empirical evidence that such policies stymie growth and preclude would be entrepreneurs (real wealth and job creators) from starting businesses.

Capitalism is self repairing and resilient, and it would've been nice to have seen Romney declare it as such and illustrate how Obamacare, Dodd-Frank, and the President's unilateral decision to usurp the banckruptcy code in the case of the GM restructuring have done nothing to impede growth and permanently raise the cost of capital to companies. MORE IN NEXT POST

Let's face it, the most critical issue facing the country is the fiscal mess. Government will not solve the problem through its Keynesian polices of goverment spending and raising taxes. Goverment has never been able to efficiently allocate capital and basic economics tells us that when you tax something you usually get less of it.

Goverment needs to take a backseat and let the private sector create wealth, the by product being an increased standard of living for all. Those who believe government is the answer to their economic problems are strongly mistaken and delusional; simply stated folks, nothing has done more to reduce poverty, increase convenience and raise the standard of living more than capitalism.

I was wondering what everyones opinion is on the fact that Obama won the election by basically winning the vote in the big cities The arguement with Romney was that he did not understand the average person does this mean the all the average Americans live in big cities In PA Romney won 53 counties to Obamas 14 but philly and pitt decided the outcome. Romney also won more counties in other states for instance Florida 55 to 12 Ohio 72 to 16 Virginia 78 to17 these states were colored 90 percent red but becaus of big cities like miami, cleveland these states turned blue. it was like this in most of the states Obama won Romney even won the county race in liberal calfornia but L.A ,Frisco and san diego did him in. Even N.Y state was a virtual draw if you take queens and the bronx and surrounding areas where Obama carried 80 to 90 percent pluss of the vote out of the equation. In pa Romney won most of his 53 counties by 15 to70 percent but philly pitt and york determined the outcome. Im not saying Obama did not win fair and square he did and he also won the popular vote and even though i disagree with him alot i wish him well and hope congress works with him and they both make the necessary compromises to move foreward because im an American first republican distant second. Im just saying the question of who average middle class America relates to may have to be re asked.

I have not done enough research, and probally wont but my guess would be that if you would take away the votes from the three largest cities in every state Romney would have won by a landslide. If this were true what does it mean. the mid west and south and rural and most suberban areas voted for romney but Obama won by getting votes from the big cities on the east and west coast . if you look at the ohio map area wise the map was 95 % republican a little corner in the northeast was blue. Do residents of big cities now control the path America takes

Interesting analysis ron, but if you look at some of the totals for the counties, it is only 30k or less people voting. Heck Potter County only had about 6k people vote, compared to 600k in Philadelphia. Chester county is interesting as about 232k people voted, and the percentages were 49.8 Romney, 49.1 Obama. Pretty darn close. Montgomery County was more for Obama as well. 56.5 to 42.4.
I totally agree with your hope that Congress works with Obama. I am an independent who tends to lean conservative, but the refusal to compromise, from both sides is the major problem facing this countries ability to get back on track.

The GOP is rightfully earned in Catch 22 situation. It cannot survive intact unless it changes its policies and positions, and it cannot survive intact if it does. That of course has historically been the fate of political groups that are uncompromisingly dogmatic. Want proof? It is the southern democratic party of the 40s, 50s, and 60s that would not open its doors to African Americans. It morphed into the a part of the republican party. But today's republican party has no chance to morph into the big tent of the democratic party that grows every year. Today's republican party is a dinosaur. It has to make a dramatic adaptation or die.

No, the GOP will be called upon to save the country when Democrats spend us into a situation like Greece. Forced austeristy imposed by the countries who will no longer loan us money because they think we will become insolvent. When they happens, all the payoffs to the lazy takers in the "big tent" will end... and no Democrat will be able to stop it. In fact, most of the Democratic base will end up living in a "big tent".
The end is coming folks. The big giveaway society of the Democrats, the one that spends $1.3 trillion dollars a year, is going to go down. When people have no food, they'll be less likely to be worried about gay marriage or abortion. Rather, they'll want the destroyed economy fixed.
You're days are numbered Democrats, because you model is NOT SUSTAINABLE without massive deficit spending.... and that only has a few more years to work.
You're the lazy, the stupid, the bums, the non-productive, the takers. It doesn't matter that you are 51% of the people. The free money deficit spending spigot will soon be turned off.

Ms. Reidy, No one sees abortion as an alternative to birth control. Quite frankly no one is in favor of abortion. However, we are in favor of the freedom, liberty, freedom of religion as well as freedom from religion. We are also in favor of the privacy of families, and women and their doctors. Further, in the United States of America we believe that women's bodies like mens should never be nationalized. Once women's bodies become a ward of the state what other laws will be placed on their reproduction capabilities?

Right we object to our tax dollars being used to fund attacks on nations without just cause. We are tired of the District of Columbia having Zero representation and voice in what goes on in our country, but expect them to live under the rules that everyone else dictates. - Shall I go on?

DPB,

I reply to your comment about a "having another cilvil war" in the future due I'd like to point out that America has been engaged in a long standing civil war since the dawn of the industrial era and the end of the actual Civil War. That war was fought over the right of African Americans to vote, ride in any seat on bus, use a restroom, etc. It also was fought to end child labor, get women the right to vote, and obtain the right to collectively bargain. On Tuesday we ad the most recent battle. The winners protected the middle and lower income class. The losers took a hit in the armor of those in the the upper income class that act as if they are special and need to be protected from the less fortunate who they see as grifters, takers, users, lazy, and so on. This ongoing civil war will continue for years to come and until the election demographics of the Nation result in fair treatment of all.

And what did all those green energy companies do? Pay CEO's millions, then go bankrupt and lay off the workers. Sounds like Barack Romney, huh? At least the oil subsidies lead to more oil production. The Green Energy money was just flushed down the crapper.

Right on the money. And what's hilarious is the liberals don't understand that very soon, we will have a debt crisis, and then all the play money they give away to millions will dry up. The lazy dependent bums will then riot. Just look at Greece... they are raging against the austerity that their LENDERS are requiring from them. The same will happen to us. There will be nobody left to lend us money, unless we do what THEY say... and that will include cutting the give aways by 50% or more. CONTRATULATIONS DEMOS.... you win the battle... you will lose the war.

@DPB- not that I'm trying to harp on this issue further, but I became curious about the actual costs associated with the war on drugs. The US spends about $45 billion annual on both a federal and state level. Over a ten year period that's nearly half a trillion dollars. Again, not a panacea to our debt issues, but it's a start. There's also the residual costs associated with incarceration as it affects the offenders family thru that person's inability to earn a good living after being released; welfare, section 8 housing, food stamps, etc. Beyond that, there are the negative financial impacts that the violence surrounding the drug trade has on communities, especially our urban cores. Further, were the government to legalize and tax consumption as it does cigarettes and alcohol, they could earn upwards of $30+ billion annually. Those aren't small numbers.

The reality is that things will begin to get done. President Obama doesn't have to worry about re-election. The election results are a clear indication the Republicans need to expand their demographics and moderate their ideology regarding social issues. Failure to do so will result in the GOP continuing to lose ground as a national party.

While far right Republicans may continue to hold onto safe house districts, just look at the Senate races. All of their arch conservative Senate candidates lost - even Tommy Thompson lost. Every incumbent Dem Senator won. Republicans are losing appeal with the broader American electorate. Whites as a percentage of total voters was down another 4% over 2008. Women and young people continue to make up a lager percentage of the electorate.

Face it, there just aren't enough older white guys to keep the Republicans competitive on a national basis. They going to have to change or whither away.

Alaska 722,718
Idaho 1,584,985
Montana 998,199
Nebraska 1,842,641
North Dakota 683,932
South Dakota 824,082
Wyoming 568,158

The city of Philadelphia has a population of more than 1.5 million. Now, go look up the populations of NY, LA, Chicago, San Diego, Jacksonville.

DPB, we elect presidents based on the population (people that is) of states, not square mileage.

Crestor, as to your "list"

Gay marriage - Marriage equality will never be a federal issue. It's a state issue. And by the way, marriage equality measures passed in MD, ME and WA this week and an amendment to the Minn constitution to define marriage was defeated.

Comprehensive Immigration reform - it's going to happen if the the Repubs want to expand their based. It they don't, they will never win the presidency again.

2nd stimulus - won't happen because it's not needed

Increase taxes on the rich - Did you hear Boehner yesterday? We will see changes to tax policy, including increases on the rich, as part of a balance approached to reduce the deficit. Boehner and other Repubs know they are going to have to compromise in order to survive.

Replace CONSERVATIVE justices with liberal ones - It will happen if the opportunity arises. The house has nothing to do with appointing Justices. Read the constitution Crestor.

Improve the economy - 5.5 million jobs in the past 30 months, smaller deficits each year since the last Bush budget and a stock market that has doubled in the last three years. Yes it could be happening faster, but it's moving in the right direction. A fact that a majority of Americans recognized on Tuesday.

KDUFI: Just keep bashing yourself into irrelevance with your spewing hate. Keep making sure the GOP brand belongs to narrow-minded, fact-impaired people. That will serve you well as the 2014 midterm elections approach. Keep reminding people the GOP is the party of angry old white men.

And by the way -- I'm not Jewish. Not every name ending in "Stein" is Jewish. I'm sure that's a shocker to people who blindly believe in sweeping stereotypes.

Take a drive through Willistown Township and look at all the multi-million-dollar homes with Obama lawn signs. These are homes owned by successful entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, engineers, inventors -- all supporting the President.

That should burst your little bubble of belief that only "moochers" support Obama.

I'm sick of the Tea Party pretending like they matter to the GOP.
If the Tea party is so relevant...so important to the GOP, why wasn't the word "tea party" mentioned one single time during the GOP convention?
Because these idiotic Tea baggers are being exploited shamelessly by the GOP and they are too dim witted to realize it...they use them to get votes for them and then drop them like a bad habit.
But dancing with the devil has come back to haunt them ...they grabbed the tea-bagger tiger by the tail and can't let go now...both are now locked together in a death spiral to irrelevance..
I promise you that because the crazy tea party candidates like Aiken and Murdoch (and O'Donnell in 2010) cost the GOP the Senate majority that you are not going to be hearing a lot of GOP support for them in the coming months. They will still use them when it serves them but just like the GOP convention...they won't be talking "tea party" at all! They are playing the tea baggers for fools...and the tea baggers aren't sharp enough to catch on!
Mark my words, not talk radio or blogosphere crap but mainstream media...GOP won't even say their name!

Jusr read this in an article: More than half a century ago, author Ayn Rand - one of Paul Ryan's social and political inspirations - saw the dangers of socialism in America. In her 1,100-page opus, "Alas Shrugged," she presciently predicted the direction of the country and the consequences inherent in that course. The book tells the story of how her protagonist, John Galt, has had enough of the leaches who will not work and the bureaucrats who cater to them. Galt recruits the brightest, most productive members of society to go on strike in order to deprive the nation's parasites of the support they need to continue redistributing wealth they did not earn.

Now that Obama has won a second four-year term to continue his leftist agenda, one has to wonder just how many of the people who actually pay the bills in this country intend to "go John Galt."

Hopefully anyone who's ever considered 'going Galt' will do it and clear the way for less myopically-inclined businessmen to fill the void they leave. The future of entrepreneurial action in this country lies in creating a healthy, empowered workforce who circulate currency through all strata of the market - Rand's short-term profit-maximizing unregulated free market philosophies are the root of today's economic struggles, not the solution. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Atlas.

Concerned for our future

9:06 pm on Thursday, November 8, 2012

The election is over. Yes, I'm disappointed but Obama won fair and square. Even more disappointed that Romney was the best that the Republican Party could come up with.
Going forward we need Obama to get our elected officials to come together to do what's right for our country. Isn't that the role of a 'leader'? I worry that these officials are more concerned about getting reelected than doing what's right.
In listening to the debates prior to the election, I was especially disappointed in hearing Obama's response on how he was going to get government functioning, Way too much "us" versus "them" so I really worry if he can fix this mess we're in.

My prediction:
Taxes - For those of us working, we're going to be paying more. Hopefully the money will be used to repay our massive debt but I don't have alot of faith that it won't go for more socialistic programs.
Spending cuts - have to happen. We can't afford another trillion dollar year. Cuts are going to hurt someone and the decisions won't be easy but this is one area where the Republicans may have some success.
International - we can't afford another war so Iran/Libya will need to figure it out. Our lead as an internl peacekeeper may be forever over as we can no longer afford to protect others less fortunate.
Homeland Security - one area where I think Obama has done a decent job. We have alot of smart people working in and with our govt so we don't have another 9/11and they have done a GREAT JOB.

Concerned, as someone from the other side of the aisle, I pretty much agree with your assessment and predictions. Without an election to win, I believe we'll see very little "we versus them" from Obama and he learned his lesson about "we won" comments.

This is now a great opportunity for Boehner. I see him as key. With the long list of tea party losses on Tuesday, Cantor will be less of a factor. Hopefully McConnell will come around. If Reed and Pelosi don't get greedy, maybe something real will get done.

Look, Obama is now concerned about going down in history as a great president. He wants to be more than just the first African-American president. To do so, he needs to accomplish great things - finish the recovery from the second greatest economic crisis in history, reduce the debt and deficits, social security, immigration reform, etc.

Boehner can be Obama's Gingrich (hopefully without the nastiness). Obama knows we have to seriously attack the deficit issue. Boehner can end up with a lot of the credit if he plays it right.

Actually, I think Boehner and the GOP are going to have to cooperate in large part. If they don't, they will end up with most of the blame for failure. Something that a party in crisis and in need of retooling can't afford.

It doesn't matter that he is a convicted felon and a sociopath. Frankly as a pit bull owner, I don't care what color he is, I just loath and despise him for what he did to innocent dogs and how he helped ruin the reputation of a great breed of dog. But you must admit that "protectionism" does exist in this country and a majority of people voted for Obama based on his skin color and not the issues at hand. That's an assumption on your part. Using that logic, it would be equally fair to say that a majority of those who voted against Obama also did so due to his skin color. I'm willing to admit that there are some who used that as a motivating factor in their choice, but I would consider using the word "majority" as a litmus. Also, pit bulls are awesome dogs. @DPB & Jim Aspen- I can only assume that you are equally as critical of republicans and their spending habits that include two unfunded wars mixed with heavy tax cuts for the most affluent. No one is dismissing the need to look for savings, but to act like lowering taxes on the affluent is somehow a benefit is faulted logic. Allowing the Bush era tax cuts to expire isn't an act of raising taxes. It's allowing taxes to return to the level they once were before they were lowered in a failed experiment to stimulate the economy. As for the continued use of the 47% figure as a description of moochers, that's also a fallacy. As has been pointed out, the vast majority of those people are the working poor, the elderly, the disabled and veterans. if you really want to attack those you see as takers look at walmart. It's one of the wealthiest companies in the world & one of the nation's largest employers, yet it pays it's employees so poorly that they are forced to turn to government subsidies to get by. The company even encourages them to do so. All while they support cheap manufacturing in china. Be real. It's not poor people raping this country.

No one is losing freedom. Debt has been a growing problem for decades. I agree that we need to fix it, but it's going to continue being a problem regardless of who is president because it's the American lifestyle. If we start ending unnecessary wars, we'd save a lot of money and valuable lives. We're not headed for communism. A bit of socialism wouldn't be terrible. Just to add on to my comment...what are we accomplishing by discussing all of this on here? If you want something to be done, start a petition for a small change, send it to the local government, then the state, and finally to the president if it's successful. I couldn't agree more - it's time for the wealthiest members of our nation to return to a 90s-level taxation rate so we can fund the long-term rehabilitation of our economy. They are simply going to have to stop being so dependent on government tax breaks.

wealthy people have to stop being dependent on government tax breaks...i feel like i'm taking crazy pills that someone can formulate that in their head...wealthy people dependent on tax breaks. the government is dependent upon successful people to have enough revenue to operate, never mind buy votes behind the veil of "compassion". This administration feels it's appropriate to attack those successful people.

look, never mind all that. if i thought that tax increases would actually be used to correct the problem we have, i would be for it. but it won't! all that tax increases will do is allow the politicians to expand programs, make federal government bigger, less efficient, and more wasteful. what have you seen of the federal government that gives you confidence that they can right the problem? nobody in DC cares about doing what's right...it's all about how to gain more power (on both sides of the aisle, though the amplitude is much higher in liberals). If you think that the government would appropriately use additional revenue gained by increased taxes, then i don't know what to tell you. that's the irreconcilable difference between us. I see nothing that shows me that they wouldn't just waste the money.

Comment_arrow

Morgan King

"the government is dependent upon successful people to have enough revenue to operate"?
Is it? I'm pretty sure they'd make about the same tax revenue by spreading the tax burden to a broader portion of a slightly wealthier populace. A slightly wealthier populace that has the extra income to afford things made in the US, eat at local restaurants, and shop at niche startups? Economic recovery, and meaningful job growth, starts at the community level, not the corporate level. Our national economy has always been at its strongest when our income inequality was at its lowest.

The rest of us will be rationed- to think otherwise is as ill-informed as a 2 yr old. Look up the "Whole Lives System" this is what our healthcare will look like in the very near future. Do any of you understand what the New World Order and UN Agenda 21 is actively doing to take away your property rights, your rights to privacy and the the to protect yourselves? This is not a democrat vs republican issues - this is the plan of the NWO (the real rich) elites to create a world in which human population will be decreased by 80%, the population that is left will be herded into inner city high-rise living where you will be alloted a certain amount of sq ft to live, energy units to use, limited to the amount of water you will have, and no means to travel as cars will be banned from these inner city pods. You will work, live and socialize within a certain radius. For you who are in favor of "green energy" projects - where do you think that money is going? why do you think so many of these companies go under? that money is being redistributed to the rest of the world. The intent is to level the playing field as obama likes to say - it is not going to help citizens of the USA - UN agenda 21 calls for the rise of China, India, Africa. That means that 48 to 49 percent of the public supported a smaller more conservative government. I hope we get government that represents ALL the people. That is why our founding fathers set branches of government up in a manner that would keep one party from forcing policies. Now I hear they want to get rid of filibustering. My immediate plan is to contact my House and Senate representatives on the State and Federal level. Federally, the "CLIFF" is looming, and anything other than a fair across the board compromise from either party is unacceptable and, therefore, not earning their keep. Now is the time to make your voice heard because now they (Republicans and Democrats) are listening. You may not agree with my across the board "lessen the burden by sharing the burden" philosophy and that is fine. What ever your ideas are, share it with your reps. Please share your thoughts and ideas on the "Cliff." I'm all ears and open for the positive.

While I agree somewhat, there is no sense in trying to communicate with those in government It is a waste of time. Nothing will be accomplished and we all will fall by the wayside. Our elected keep track of who owes what to whom and they slammed the brakes. Those in power will continue their blackmailing strategies for there will never be compromises and one always believes his idea is more important than the next. The public always lose and we will end up at the wrong end of the stick I am afraid. Peace.

Hey Crestor! I'm a Republican and that doesn't matter. Anyway, you just go on being who you are.

I disagree slyfox. If people would stay in contact with our elected, it would, indeed, make a difference. Although, I understand the feeling when you email your reps and you receive the automated "thanks a bunch" response; what you convey can feel like it got sucked into a black hole.

If folks can take the time to type a response on a comment board such as this, it is just as easy to shoot an email to your reps. In fact, you can do it in one shot if it applies to the issue.
