Cleaning Up Media's Litter Problem

Steps are being taken to clean up the cigarette butts that litter State Street.

With the many businesses, restaurants and foot traffic along State Street in Media Borough, the street stays pretty clean. The borough's public works department does a great job with street sweeping and maintaining the garbage and recycle bins along the street.

But on the weekends, cigarette butts and sometimes empty bottles or other trash litter the street.

According to Media Pa. News, the borough's Community Design Committee and the Media Business Authority are looking into solutions to correct the litter issue.

The author of Media Pa. News is Borough Councilman Kent Davidson.

Some of the possible solutions include hiring weekend street cleaners and enforcing litter laws.

Joe the clown always did a good job and entertained the people while he swept the sidewalks.I'm sure there are volunteers that would like to dress up and do it on weekends.During the week store owners should police there own areas .

I agree with Jim^
I think that State Street is usually fine looking, but my biggest gripe is dog poop! It's not everyone, but there are still people who don't clean up after their canine friends, or leave big piles that end up getting tracked for half a block. That is by far the grossest. I think it just takes vigilance by each individual store owner to keep there block clean.

I 100% agree. As a dog owner who always makes sure my dog's poop is picked up, it makes me crazy to see dog poop on State Street. There are some lazy people out there.

Property owners are paying property taxes all the way to the centerline of the road so, instead of paying higher property taxes to hire somebody to sweep the gutters, lawns, and sidewalks, why not ordinance property owners to clean up their own property? For safety sake, a street sweeping machine, operated by a hired [by bid] contractor makes more sense than encouraging property owners to clean up after litterbugs in traffic lanes.
