Get Out: Veterans Day Parade, Arts Stroll, Blackthorn, Cars 2

Try a little something of everything this week with local events including a Veterans Day parade, casino night, acoustic singer-songwriter performance, raucous Irish rock show and a free Saturday movie for the kids. Choose from our best bets for this week in the Media area below.

Patch's Best Bets for the Week

VETERANS DAY PARADE

Where/When: Downtown Media on Friday at 11:11 a.m. Parade begins at Edgmont Street and continues down State Street to Veterans Square.
Why Go: Join friends and neighbors lining the street to honor the courage and sacrifice of veterans of all wars walking in the state's largest Veterans Day parade. Maybe you'll get a glimpse of Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill also participating in the day's ceremony. Along with veterans groups, Congressman Pat Meehan and county and borough council members, a dozen bands are expected to march, including Penncrest and Strath Haven High School bands.
Pricing: Free.


SECOND SATURDAY ARTS STROLL

Where/When: Downtown Media from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
Why Go: Stroll the streets of Media and enjoy art, live music and evening shopping. This Saturday features family friendly events ranging from an autumn art activity at Selene Whole Foods Co-op to family karaoke at Front Street Fountain. Or make it a girls night or date night and be sure to catch the 20 percent off sale at Ten Thousand Villages, the free tango lessons at Sangha Space or the 5-course Fabulous Flavors of Fall Dinner at On a Roll (reservations required). Stop for live music throughout the evening at nine locations along State Street.

BLACKTHORN

Where/When: Media Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
Why Go: Support the headlining event of Celebrate Media, three nights of art, music and performance to benefit the non-profit organizations that strengthen our community. Also, see why Irish rock band Blackthorn has been winning over live audiences in the Philadelphia region for over 20 years. They're sure to own the stage with their raucous and heartrending original songs and their contemporary take on traditional Irish music.
Pricing: $20 per ticket.


SATURDAY SHOWTIME

Where/When:Media-Upper Providence Free Library at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Why Go: Enjoy a G- or PG-rated movie every second Saturday at the library. This Saturday features the highly anticipated Cars 2. Enjoy snacks provided by the library while you catch a movie the whole family can enjoy.
Pricing: Free.


LIZ LONGLEY

Where/When: Newtown Square coffeehouse Burlap and Bean at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
Why Go: Likely to be the next acoustic breakout artist, Liz Longley is highly regarded for her personal, emotionally engaging songwriting. She is actively touring the US and has opened for America, Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole, Nanci Griffith, Amos Lee, Colin Hay, Crowded House, Jonathan Edwards and Livingston Taylor.
Pricing: $15.


CASINO NIGHT 

Where/When: St. Pius X in Broomall from 6:30 to 11 p.m. on Saturday.
Why Go: Play blackjack, roulette, craps and other casino games in the auditorium and cafeteria at this fundraiser hosted by the Home and School Association. Plus, enjoy tons of raffle prizes and a delicious buffet dinner.
Pricing: $60 per person, includes $30 in 'casino money.'
