Name: Robert Brown
Hometown: Newtown Square and Brookhaven
Rank/Title: Patrol Officer
How long have you been with the Media Police Department?
17 years and was in the Navy prior to Media Police
What do you like about your job?
I like helping people. It's fun meeting different people and the whole department is great. It's a fun job, it keeps you on your toes. There's no internal pressure. We like to joke around.
What do you dislike about your job?
I don't like people who take advantage of kids or the elderly. I don't like when people can't take care of themselves (financially) and there's nothing we can do about it, with the economy the way it is. People need help and they can't get it.
What inspired you to become a police officer?
From as far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a police officer. Things you did in grade school, papers and things, saying what you wanted to be when you grew up, I always wanted to be a cop. So when I got out of the Navy it seemed like the next step, so I applied.
What do you like about the greater Media area?
It's so diverse and there's a little bit of everything. People are always coming in to town for something different, for things like Super Sunday or Dining Under the Stars. They really go out of their way to bring people in. It's really a cool town.
What do you want the general public to know about the Media Police Departmet?
We're human and you're going to run across all different types of cops, some are straight laced but we like to joke around too. We have a good sense of humor because we work in such a stressful environment. You hear more about the bad than the good but we're trying to help people. If you have a bad experience with one cop remember you have to look at it from both sides.
We really have a good rapport with surrounding police departments too. If we call for back up, our own guys will be there of course, but the other departments show up too and we do the same for them.
