Poll: Should Trick-or-Treating Be Rescheduled?

People from many communities affected by Hurricane Sandy are debating whether or not the annual tradition should be moved to this weekend.

While many communities in New Jersey have postponed Halloween due to Hurricane Sandy damage, the question is not as clear in Pennsylvania. But people from many communities affected by the storm in Philadelphia and its suburbs are debating whether or not the annual tradition should be moved to the weekend this year.

Some towns will be pushing Halloween trick-or-treating to the weekend to give authorities time to clear the streets and walkways. But trick-or-treating in others will go forward Wednesday evening.

What do you think? Vote in our poll and tell us when you will be dressing up or handing out treats by commenting below.

It's important to note that while public safety officials can make recommendations the decision in neighborhoods that are safe (no downed lines or trees) is really up to private citizens. There is no state of emergency in effect at this point so there is no curfew or force of law that says you can't trick or treat.

If you have a neighborhood association that may be the best organization to make a "community" decision.

Many churches and other organizations have harvest parties. If you know of a Springfield church or organization(s) that is sponsoring a trick or treat/harvest/fall party that is open to the public let us know by posting a comment here.

Some sections of Broomall are still without power...hoping we can postpone Halloween to Friday. Just want the kids to be safe. Also, to allow those without power to have the time to take care of their own issues too.
The trees are over saturated and it is not safe. Hopefully Marple Township will provide some guidance. Everyone stay safe.

Krissy, I just got word from Marple Commissioners President (6th Ward) Michael Molinaro that the area of Marple Summit is still trick-or-treating tonight. The neighborhood kids will be going around together and neighbors will be giving candy at the end of their driveways. This is their tentative plan. I'd suggest talking to your neighbors.

It would just be easier for everyone involved if they moved it to Friday. Scoda is a nice man but anytime he needs to make a decision, he usually picks the wrong one.

Here in Phoenixville, where most people have power and the roads are passable, there's no reason to postpone it.

Well this is how Mr. Molinaro's neighborhood does their holiday to begin with. This is not how the other sections of Marple do it. There are areas still without power. That means no street lights too. The trees are over saturated everywhere. This should be the priority.

Nether Prov announced that they are moving trick or treating to Sat! My kids are going to freak out. We are over in South Media - no downed trees or wires that I have seen. I think we're going to see if anyone is out.

I think that the Township should make the call, not the neighborhoods. We're all going to be standing around wondering if we should wait until the weekend or go out tonight. Our neighborhood isn't all that close knit so making it 'up to the neighborhood' seems sort of lazy and disconnected. Radnor Twshp made the announcement to move it to Sunday. Why does TE take such a passive attitude about this???

Saturday would have been better because Sunday is the change to daylight savings and it will be dark earlier.

I think it was a smart decision on behalf of the township to postpone Halloween trick-or-treating. The streets in my neighborhood are covered with debris and are dangerous to navigate during the day, let alone in the dark (and many residents have not yet had their power restored) with costumes and masks. And yet many parents think it's okay to let their kids loose on the streets under these conditions.

Newtown Township Manager Mike Trio says because it is not a federal holiday townships are unable to regulate whether Halloween should be postponed or canceled. The township recommends parents to use their discretion when trick-or-treating, especially in areas/neighborhoods without power.

I'm not surprised that Newtown couldn't take the initiative and make a strong recommendation to its citizens. They have been negligent about citizen safety and preparedness all through this ordeal. I saw no effort to clear storm drains or cite homeowners for placing leaves in the street as has been done often in the past. At least not in my neighborhood. While Marple Twp. posted resources for its citizens and named 2 shelters, one of which was in Newtown, this township recommended we "shelter in place" with no mention of emergency shelters. I am very disappointed.

Wouldn't it be nice to just do it alternatively on a regular basis. For example - the Saturday BEFORE halloween - this way there would be time for dinner and putting on costumes, and you wouldn't have to worry about getting home to get them to bed for school after "sugaring" them up with the candy............just a thought. For this Halloween, I would like to see it wait until Friday night or Saturday. Lots of places have no power - so no lights at the houses, no street lights, debris on the sidewalks and streets. I just hope it is safe enough for the kids to have a good time!! Happy Halloween everyone!!

Just really concerned with the over saturated trees. There are still sections of Broomall with no power and neighborhoods in the dark.

We have a power line down right in front of our walk path to the front door, and even better it is only 3ft off the ground so thank you Jennifer Kim for mentioning the driveway idea which is what we will need to be doing tonight.

Obviously Halloween is not a federal holiday. Marple Township could make a suggestion...they are responsible for the safety and welfare of the individuals here. Just trying to get everyone on the same page. If Halloween were to be postponed everyone is safe and no kids miss out. It really that easy.

Go to WPVI for a complete listing of townships that have postponed Halloween (even though it is not a federal holiday). Marple families need to go to the next township meeting to be heard...this is ridiculous.

People have been cooped up long enough, go for it. People can navigate around sticks and debris. As long as the streets are not blocked off because of hazards, everyone should get out and take a well deserved break

So glad halloween is going on as planned. You don't need electricity to trick or treat as they have done for hundreds of years. The kids need to get out and have some fun! No more sulking because of not tv, computers, or other electronics! This is good encouragement to get active. Parents should of course be supervising, but this really would go without saying weather their was a hurricane or not.

In the future, I would like to see trick-or-treating moved to the last Saturday in October. This would all the kids time to enjoy Halloween celebrations without worrying about school the next day. Maybe this is something that Marple Township can look into for next year.

So since when is the GOVT in charge of Halloween? Responsible citizens can use their common sense and make the decision to participate or not. That's part of the problem, we no longer are able exercise our own judgement on everyday matters, we require GOVT to determine what is right and wrong. Well my decorations are up, the candy is out and my lights will on to welcome any trick or treaters.

I'm glad you had the ability to have the lights on, I didn't and neither did anyone on my street and we still had Trick or Treating. I saw kids, alone, going down a street 2 blocks long to get free candy, all because some people like you can't think past themselves and demand to not have this pushed back so everyone can get their power back, sort out what needs to be sorted, like taking care of downed trees and wires, so EVERYONE can enjoy Halloween.

The authority--Marple & Newtown Townships--need to remember that this holiday is for the kids. Other ordinances have decided to be responsible and make sure that kids from responsible families are not left out. Halloween should always be on the last Friday of the month of October. Too bad that these townships do not care about the kiddies and their safety.

Really Krissy ???? Awfully strong words to suggest that township leaders do not care about the safety of our children. My two younger children are out with their mother right now, utilizing flashlights and taking the same precautions we take every year. In fact, all of us commissioners have children in our community, and we friends who have children as well. We love them all, and hope they have fun tonight. I trust that our residents can make decisions on their own as it relates to many safety issues.. Happy Halloween. Joe Rufo. 1st Ward commissioner

People have lost their minds, I would find it very convenient to move all kinds of days on the calendar, have you checked the poll results above? I for one would take my board of supervisors or commissioner to task on their legal right to do anything more then recommend an alternate date, that I and many others simply would ignore, and hold it on, of all days, October 31st. This would be just as much of a disaster, if not more, as when states make their own rule regarding daylight savings time observence.

Facts are facts. We were just in a state of emergency. Many folks in Marple are still without power. A recommendation would of been appreciated during this time from the township.

Hi Melinda, the township sent notices out during the state of emergency through the global connect system. However there is no state of emergency today, as power has been restored to most residences. I must say, my kids are enjoying halloween, and there were no safety issues tonight that I am aware of. We were lucky in Marple, in that we were not hit as hard as some other communities.

We're talking about free candy here people....every one of the younger kids has had some sort of celebration? in school. If you dont want to trick or treat because you're concerned about your child's safety, then don't. If you don't want to participate because you don't have power or just dont want to, you're free to do that. But having different dates for different communities is absurd. Go bring a warm meal to someone who has lost their power, offer to let them use your shower. The kiddies will survive without all the candy dontcha think?
