Christmas music during the holiday season can be heard along State Street coming from speakers that line the street from Orange to Monroe streets.
Media Patch wants to know what you think of the music. Do you enjoy hearing the holiday favorites as you shop, dine and walk along State Street? Or do you work or live on State Street and the constant Christmas tunes give you a headache?
The Media Business Authority runs the speaker system and plays occassional music throughout the year. Christmas music during the holiday season that began on Black Friday, and jazz and other classics around the time of the Roots Ramble, Blues Stroll and Jazz by Night Celebration.
Zubair Khan, executive director of the MBA, said the speaker and music system has been around for more than 17 years and it is in need of an update. The MBA is in the process of updating the system and improving the speakers as well as the scheduling system that plays the music.
"Sometimes it malfunctions and plays longer than it's supposed to," he said.
The Christmas music is scheduled but not limited to run from about 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the weekends during the holiday season, Khan said. But the MBA may decide to run it at other times if events or things are happening in the downtown area, like the carriage rides on Wednesdays.
The music, however, is not consistent throughout the length of State Street. Some blocks the music is very loud, while other blocks it's barely audible.
Khan said this is because some residents who live along State Street may have complained about the music and the MBA shut off or turned down the speakers on those blocks.
"Most people like the ambience when they are shopping or dining," he said. "But it's not fair to disturb people who live above the stores either. People have different opinions and we're not going to make everyone happy."
But, Khan said, the MBA receives fewer complaints about the music during the winter months because most residents have their windows closed and it's not as loud as it could be during the summer months when windows are often open.
