Teacher Spotlight: Media Elementary's Jayne Walker

This Media Elementary School second grade teacher was inspired by her grandmother to become a teacher.

Media Patch is offering a feature called Teacher Spotlight where we will feature a local teacher who deserves recognition. Teachers give a lot to their students, schools and studies and we'd like to recognize them and say a simple, thank you, for all that they do.

This Media Elementary School second grade teacher has taught at the school almost her entire career and says her grandmother, who was also a teacher, inspired her to get into the field.

What do you like most about your job:

I like watching the kids grow as they learn, especially when they're working on a specific skill and they get that "aha moment" and feel so proud and confident in their learning. And knowing when they leave me at the end of year that I've done the best job I can do in order to prepare them for the next year.

Why did you become a teacher:

My grandmother was my inspiration. She taught at a time when women didn't work and she started her career in a one-room school house. She'd spend time with my family and tell us funny stories or things she was working on and how she was teaching them. I felt like it was an exciting career for her and I wanted to do the same.

What do you like best about your current school:

We're like a family here, the faculty and staff are all supportive of each other, both professionally and personally. We all work hard to meet the kids needs. We have great parents too, who are very involved with the education of their children. I'm fortunate to work here. It's like a home, away from home.
