In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, area residents are looking for ways to help our neighbors to the North and West. Below is a list of local Media Patch locations that are collecting items to send to New Jersey and New York. Please add to the comments section if you know of a place collection relief items. Middletown Township has announced a special yard waste collection to help residents properly dispose of sticks and branches that came down during Hurricane Sandy. All residents residing in Recycling Area 1 (south of the SEPTA rail line) will be collected on Tuesday, Nov. 6. All residents residing in Recycling Area 2 (north of the SEPTA rail line) will be collected on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Yard waste must be placed at the curb the evening before collection or before 6 a.m. on the day of collection. Middletown Township may have been the hardest hit area within Media Patch during Superstorm Sandy. The township continued to see power outages and some road closures Thursday. Should any resident come across barricades, caution tape, cones etc., please remember that they are placed there to indicate a hazardous condition and should not be crossed. Hurricane Sandy caused wide-spread damage along the East Coast and locally caused power interruptions to more than 850,000 PECO customers—making Sandy the most damaging storm in company history, according to PECO's website. PECO had restored service to more than 710,000 customers by 4 a.m. Friday. As of 4 a.m. Friday, 140,000 PECO customers were still without service. Rose Tree Media School District announced Tuesday night that all the schools in the district would see a two-hour delay Wednesday, Oct. 31 with the exception of Penncrest High School, which will be closed. Penncrest staff and students will not have school Oct. 31 due to a power outage at the building. Media Patch reported that a large tree had brought down wires on Barren Road right near the high school on Tuesday. The wires were seen to be smoking and PECO was blocking the roadway at about 3 p.m. on Tuesday. All other Rose Tree Media schools are on a two hour delay Wednesday, with staff …

Forecasters say Hurricane Sandy could bring sustained and gusts of wind between 40 and 75 mph. So, how strong could that wind actually be? The Beaufort Scales are used to measure wind speed. The scale uses a 1 through 12 rating for wind ranging from "Calm" to "Hurricane" force. Here are some of the ratings: Near Gale (32-38 mph) - Whole trees in motion, inconvenience in walking. Gale (39-46 mph) - Difficult to walk against wind. Twigs and small branches blown off trees. Strong Gale (47-54 mph) - Minor structural damage may occur (shingles blown off roofs). With Hurricane Sandy, aka Frankenstorm, predicted to be a catastrophic “perfect storm,” the Delaware County SPCA is asking for the community's help before the storm hits. The most urgent need is short-term foster homes for the 160 animals currently waiting to be adopted at the Adoption Center. Temporary, one-week foster homes would ensure the safety of the homeless animals, enabling free space in the areas closest to outside windows and doors, keeping the animals in the shelter out of harm’s way.
