Media's Friends School Celebrates Diwali

Media-Providence Friends School counts itself tremendously fortunate in having a richly diverse school community and encourages school families to share their cultural and faith traditions. Exposure to new ideas and perspectives helps foster the deep respect for difference in others that the school aims to instill within students.

Kindergarten classes at MPFS had an opportunity to learn about Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights from MPFS parents Savitha Krishna and Anil Srinivasamurthy recently.  The two visiting moms explained that Diwali is celebrated on the darkest day of fall -- this year November 2nd and 3rd -- and the symbolism behind the many lights, candles and fireworks that accompany the festival, which marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year.  Diwali lights are lit to signify the driving away of darkness and ignorance, as well as the awakening of the light within us.  Many students noted that the theme of light is common among November and December holidays like Solstice, Hanukkah, Advent, Kwanzaa and Diwali, while one shared his Quaker family’s belief that there is “light”, or good, in each person.

Media-Providence Friends School is a Quaker PreK-8th grade day school, located in the heart of downtown Media and providing an engaging academic program that cultivates intellect, curiosity, creativity and compassion.  To learn more, visit www.mpfs.org.
