Meet Media Patch’s Greatest Baseball Fan

There's a sweet story behind these Phillies cupcakes.

You uploaded and then you voted for Media Patch's Greatest Baseball Fan.

Meet your winner, Janelle Hoole, of Media.

Hoole uploaded a photo of what appears to be just another batch of cupcakes decorated with the Phillies logo. But those cupcakes tell a much sweeter story.

Hoole made the cupcakes with her daughter Elizabeth Hoole, 10, a fourth grader at St. Mary Magdalen School in Upper Providence Township.

During Lent, the Catholic school students connected with a person in the community in a program called "Loving Bridges," where the students would visit their Loving Bridges partner at their home, make special intentions or have the partner visit the student at the school, Hoole says.

Elizabeth was paired with Dan Shellington, of Media, who is battling Multiple Sclerosis. Shellington was also a fourth grade teacher at Penn Valley Elementary School in the Lower Merion School District prior to his illness.

Hoole says Shellington is a huge Phillies fan and she and her daughter baked the cupcakes for his birthday, which happened to fall during Lent.

Hoole made the Phillies "P" out of a candy cane cookie cutter and created the cupcakes for Shellington's birthday celebration with the kids, she says.

Shellington, who is a lifelong Phillies fan, has plenty of great baseball memories but his favorite was when Mike Schmidt hit his 500th homerun, Hoole says.

Shellington also tells Hoole that Phillies Announcer Harry Kalas was the greatest announcer of all time and a resident of Media, of course.

Hoole's cupcake photo is now in the running to be Patch's Greatest Baseball Fan and take home the whole ball game of prizes. Voting for the regional contest will take place in the comments area of the regional voting article, from Wednesday, April 10 at 12:01 a.m. to Friday, April 12 at 10 a.m.

Look for the voting story on April 10 and be sure to cast your vote for Hoole and Media. She will be competing against 11 other outstanding photos. Good luck!
