Top 5 Hits in Media in 2010

Media residents, employees and visitors weigh in on their most favorite memories of the year.

As 2010 comes to a close, people in Media reflect upon the memorable moments of the year, from the many festivals along State Street, to the local charity events. Media Patch went out on the town to find out what you think are the top five hits of 2010. They are in no particular order.

Real Estate

As Media's business district builds up, and the borough becomes an even more popular place to visit, or even live, it's no wonder home-buyers would want to plant roots here. Susan Turner, a lifelong Media resident, recently bought her first home here and says she's delighted.

"I spent 10 months looking to buy a house in Media. Despite the bad economy and plunging real estate markets across the country, the prices of homes here held steady.  Some homes are only on the market a few days before they are snatched up. The competitive real estate market is one of the clearest signs Media is a desirable place to live. I am thrilled I can continue to call it my hometown."

Tug McGraw Foundation Benefit

For the sixth year in a row, The Plumstead Inn held a beef and beer for Tug McGraw Foundation for brain cancer research in August. The annual event featured a buffet, unlimited beer, silent auction, raffle, music and entertainment throughout the day. Domenic Marra, who founded the event, has bartended at The Plumstead for 23 years, and was a close friend of the late Tug McGraw. He says he's very pleased about the event's growing success.

"My favorite time of year is the benefit.  Since our first one in February 2004, a month after Tug died of brain cancer, we have raised approximately $45,000. Our fundraiser has grown over the past year to include Team Screwball, Media's running team for Team McGraw, who participate in many events, including the Media 5 Miler and Philly Half Marathon. In January, we will start to plan our events for 2011, and what a great year it will be."

Halloween

Hundreds of children, parents, onlookers, and pets too, dressed up in their favorite costumes, and came out to the 46th Annual Delaware County Halloween Parade in Media. Everyone in costume was welcome to walk the route along State Street, joining school bands, fire engines and classic cars from across the region. The Halloween fun continued throughout the night, as local restaurants threw special costume parties. Tricia Palmer, who has lived in Media her entire life, says there's nothing like it.

"Halloween in Media was probably my best memory of 2010. Getting together with friends for some hot chocolate and watching the parade was great. Better yet, I loved the anticipation of finally seeing everyone's fantastic costumes to strut around State Street for a night of fun. We know best, you are never too old for Halloween."

Craft Brewers Fest

For the connoisseur of craft beers, the 10th Annual Brandywine Valley Craft Brewers Festival, hosted by Iron Hill in Media, was the place to be. The outdoor event, held in May, showcased the latest craft beers from 25 regional breweries, as well as live music all day. Plus, all proceeds were donated to the Media Youth Center. Michele Reinhard, of Media, attends the event each year.

"The Annual Brew Fest is the perfect way to welcome spring, by spending the afternoon hanging out with friends, listening to music, and drinking great hand-crafted beer."

Food and Crafts Festival

The annual Food and Crafts Festival is held every October, and is the unofficial close to the festival season held on State Street. The event is widely popular and draws thousands of visitors. It features restaurants based in Media, as well as other popular eateries around the area. It also offers live music, entertainment and children's activities. Dan Jolly lives in the nearby town of Secane, but both works and spends a lot of free time in Media, socializing and dining. He says he highly recommends this event.

"The best event I attended this year was Food Fest. The quality and quantity of restaurants was nothing short of amazing. Each place offered something different for all tastes. This event satisfied all the senses."
