Bites Nearby: Come in to Koffee Korner for Your Morning Buzz at this Buzz Worthy Spot

This week Patch reviews Koffee Korner in Media.

There are certain buzz words that every single food article seems to include these days. You can not read a food magazine, blog or newspaper article without reading "local," "organic," "sustainable," "independent," etc. The trend these days is away from the mass producing Goliaths and towards the mom and pop operations and products from local farms and businesses.

in Media could be described with those buzz words as well. They try to use local and sustainable ingredients when they can and it is an independently owned and operated business. What makes it unique is that it is a coffee shop that offers American and Mexican fare.

I went in for a later breakfast and noticed the lovely tables set outside first. It was such a welcoming spot with the brightly colored chair cushions and pink and peach mosaic tables. Even the bottles of red ketchup and orange hot sauce added splashes of color.

It was a bit hot to eat outside, so I went inside, was greeted immediately and told to sit "wherever I'd like." I chose a booth right by the door for some prime people watching. I looked over the menu and decided on huevos rancheros. This Mexican breakfast item was something I ate all the time when I lived on the West Coast. It's not something you see all the time out here so I make it a point to try it when I can. I ordered an iced coffee to wash it all down.

The huevos rancheros came with scrambled eggs, black beans, homemade salsa, white corn tortillas and cheese and a side of home fries. Huevos rancheros literally means "ranchers eggs." I have tried dozens of variations of this dish. Sometimes the eggs are fried, other times poached, it depends on the whim of the chef. The beans can be black, refried, pinto or even white beans. I have had huevos rancheros with salsa, guacamole, pico de gallo, tomatillo sauce or with a simple side of sliced avocado with a squeeze of lime juice. The tortillas can be white corn, yellow corn or flour and they can be steamed or fried. I won't begin to name all the different kinds of cheese that can be sprinkled on top.

The huevos rancheros at Koffee Korner were pretty good. The scrambled eggs were soft and not overcooked. The black beans were cooked all the way through and seasoned nicely. I did add a heavy dose of Cholula hot sauce because it's so good. The white corn tortillas were steamed and placed on the bottom of the plate as an anchor for the dish. They had a good corn flavor and thicker texture. There was a touch too much cheese for my taste but it didn't stop me from eating it all.

The salsa with tomatoes, peppers and onions had a strong pickled flavor. I didn't mind the high acidity (since I love vinegar), but others might. The home fries though "hand cut" were on the soggy side. I suspect that the fryer oil was not hot enough. As a whole the dish was good and I must note that it came out almost instantaneously. I have never encountered service this fast.

The iced coffee was fair. It wasn't the strongest brew and there was a faint funky aftertaste that I wasn't a fan of. After some half and half and sugar in the raw it wasn't bad. I personally love iced coffees in the summer even more than lemonade. It's refreshing and fully caffeinated.

The service at Koffee Korner is excellent. The staff is among the friendliest I have dealt with and everyone is so open, welcoming and polite. My questions were answered efficiently and thoroughly and my food arrived within minutes.

I didn't realize the establishment was cash only so when I asked about the ATM, the lovely woman behind the counter told me exactly where to go. I was thinking of leaving my bag and phone behind as collateral but she let me just leave and trusted that I would come back. Obviously I did but it was so refreshing to have someone believe in the goodness of people that way.

The decor is cozy coffee shop. The space is quite clean and decorated sparsely. I thought the greenish-blue colored wall had a cooling effect on the room. You can tell that the owner's take tremendous pride in their business. Seating away from the long counter consists of booths and small tables. I caught some of the locals having great conversations about the nature of true friendship and current events.

Koffee Korner is the kind of place where you can stop in for coffee, a meal or a snack, have some chit chat with the staff and then be on your way. It's convenient, inexpensive and you know that your dollars are supporting a business that supports the community and world around it. Koffee Korner is into local and organic products, sustainable practices and recycling not because it's trendy, but because it's the right thing to do. I urge more businesses to do so. My visit was pleasant in all ways and I would imagine it's that way for all who enter there.
