Restaurant Review: No Fuss Food 'On a Roll' or Not

This week food writer Clara Park reviews On a Roll in Media.

is not just a sandwich shop. They also have burgers, wraps and salads at lunch and a dinner menu with pastas. It looks like the type of place you would see in an after school special. I envisioned teenagers hanging out and snacking on burgers and fries. I went in for a quick lunch before an appointment in town.

I ordered the grilled filet of salmon "dagwood," french fries and iced tea. The dagwood came with grilled salmon, sauteed mushrooms, peppers and spinach and provolone on a buttery roll. The salmon was fully cooked although the filet was on the thinner side. It was seasoned well. There were plenty of mushrooms, peppers and spinach which was nice. The mushrooms were white button, the peppers green bell and the spinach was regular (not baby). Fish is usually a healthier alternative to meat and the abundance of vegetables added to the nutritional profile of the sandwich. I wasn't so sure that I would love the provolone with the salmon but it wasn't bad.

The french fries were crisp but tasted odd--I can't describe it. I can usually devour a whole order of french fries but these were barely touched.

There are fountain sodas, freshly brewed iced tea and bottled iced teas. The brewed iced tea was good and only improved after a squeeze of fresh lemon. The beverages are by the utensils and condiments as this place is cafeteria style. Place your order then pick up your drink, napkins etc. When your food is ready you can grab it at the counter.

The decor is simple-clean, black chairs and tables with a small jade plant on each one. The floors are clean and there is plenty of natural light from all the windows.

The service is quite friendly and fast. I was greeted warmly and didn't have to wait too long for my sandwich or fries. The crowd seemed to be locals having lunch as well as a decent number of regulars who had their regular to-go order recited to them upon entry. On a Roll is a great neighborhood lunch or dinner spot where the food arrives fast and you probably won't spend more than $10. There are numerous healthy choices or you can opt for the other end of the spectrum and get one of their burgers or the famous Caesar salad. If you're in the area and looking for a quick bite to eat, it's an ideal spot.
