Dining Under the Stars Kicks Off

Media's popular outdoor dining event opens this 2011 season.

It’s the middle of the week in the middle of the summer. You’re dreaming of being at the shore, hanging out on the beach, strolling the boardwalk, or having a bite to eat outside on a nice night. Alas, work and other responsibilities keep you from vacationing for now, but that’s no reason you can’t have some fun to lighten up your week.

Dining Under the Stars is a good place to start. For the fourth year in a row, Media is hosting the al fresco dining event every Wednesday from May 4 through Sept. 28. Between the hours of 5 and 11 p.m., traffic is blocked off of State Street, from Jackson to Orange streets. Restaurants along State Street offer outdoor seating which extends out into the actual street, and many of the eateries have specials too. Shops and galleries stay open later, and it’s a sure bet you’ll find an array of different family friendly entertainment going on every week. From live music performed by local artists, to the Corvette show, there’s something for all ages.

Drew Arata, owner of Earth & State, offers an extra special treat for the kids, and kids at heart. He provides the jumbo chalk, you provide the creativity and artist’s hand. "Drew Draws" right in the street, and is always looking for some helpers and budding artists. He says he’s very much looking forward to this season, and expects it to be as successful as ever.

"You can expect us to keep everything great about our Wednesday nights, and to continue live music, art demonstrations and a relaxed atmosphere. This year, expect us to incorporate more of our incredible retail stores into the evening. Come to eat, stay and shop," Arata says.

The "relaxed atmosphere" that Arata discusses is the perfect setting to spend quality time with your family and friends, and offers a few hours away from the many demands of your otherwise hectic week. Plus, Dining Under the Stars fits everyone’s budget. The entertainment is free to all, plus the dining options are plentiful, and you don’t have to break the bank.

Name your favorite cuisine, and you can probably find it. Italian, Asian, French, Mexican, Indian, American Contemporary, Fair Trade and beyond. You can grab a slice of pizza, or have a four-course meal at an upscale bistro. Dining Under the Stars has it, and of course, top if off with a water ice or ice cream cone, or nice cup of java from one of the many cafes in town.
