The Newtown Square Giant in Edgmont Township will open its doors at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

This is the ninth Giant to open in Delaware County.

Giant staff and employees will cut the ribbon on the new supermarket located at 4855 West Chester Pike in the Marville Shopping Center at 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday, along with a few mummers to strut everyone inside.

Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. the Phillie Phantic will also be dropping by to do some grocery shopping.

The 43,000-square-foot Giant, which now employees 120 people, offers market fresh produce, a butcher and seafood market, bakery, deli and a cafe with free WiFi and tables for dining.

Giant acquired the Newtown Square site earlier this year. The former Genuardi’s closed its doors in June 2010.

Giant also celebrated its opening by giving back to the local community and donating five, $1,000 checks to area organizations.

Giant Spokesperson Chris Brand and Store Manager Scott Grygo awarded Edgmont Township Fire Company No. 1, Rose Tree Media School District, City Team Ministries’ Food Pantry, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Delaware County Veterans Memorial each with $1,000 on Tuesday.

"Giant is really about community giving," Brand said. "We're living here and giving here."

Giant, which first started in Carlisle, Pa. celebrates its 90th Anniversary this year in its now 200 stores in four states, Brand said.

The Newtown Square Giant will be open from 6 a.m to 11 p.m. daily.
