New Media Wawa One Step Closer to Reality

Before they can build proposed new Wawa in Media, the convenience store must first get part of the property rezoned.

The Media Borough Planning Commission recommended Borough Council approve the zoning change and redesign of Baker Street for a proposed Wawa.

The application for a Wawa at the gateway to Media Borough the former Media Inn vacant lot bordered by State Street, Providence Road and Baltimore Avenue, appeared again, before the Media Borough Planning Commission this week.

In December, Wawa pulled its application following the planning commission's opposion to a zoning request change regarding the vacant property. A small portion of the lot is currently zoned R3-Residential and would need to be changed to Business/Commercial in order for any project to move forward there.

On Tuesday, the planning commission voted 6-1 to recommend that borough council support the rezoning for commercial use and redesign Baker Street, which currently cuts through the property, according to the Delaware County Daily Times.

Baker Street would need to be altered and borough council would need to approve the roadway change in order for the project to move forward. Wawa is proposing to turn Baker Street at a 90 degree angle, at the end of the row of houses, to run behind the proposed Wawa and on to State Street.

The original zoning request was denied by the planning commission because it was presented independantly from the Wawa plan and the planning commission believed the zoning change would open the property up to unknown development, according to the Delco Times.

Wawa has also made changes to its application, including a decrease in parking spaces and the addition of outdoor seating, according to the Delco Times.

Borough council is expected to vote on the zoning change at its next meeting.
