I love Mexican food. When the weather is scorching hot, I love to dig into some fish tacos and a cold margarita. When the weather is cold, I love freshly steamed tamales or braised carnitas. The other day it was ridiculously hot and I thought I was hallucinating when I saw the signage. A new Mexican joint in Media? All I wanted was some cheap and delicious Mexican food for lunch and my wish was granted.

I went inside and ordered (you guessed it) fish tacos, guacamole and chips and a cold Mexican coke (made with actual sugar and not high fructose corn syrup). While I waited for my food, I went over to the fresh salsa bar and grabbed little containers of habanero salsa and green tomatillo salsa as well as a few wedges of lime for my tacos. My guacamole and chips were brought to my table and they were fantastic. The guacamole was bright green and made with plenty of ripe avocados. There was the right amount of salt and lime juice—no need for adjusting the seasonings here. My only complaint is that there was a sticker in my guac. When I was a young cook I accidentally left a sticker from an apple in an autumn salad I was making and it got served to a guest. I guess what goes around really does come around…The tortilla chips were thin and shattered upon impact. Generously seasoned with salt, they were tasty enough to be eaten alone but even more appealing with a big scoop of guacamole.

The fish tacos were outrageously good. Lightly battered and fried, the white-fleshed fish was flaky and tender. There was a jicama slaw on top and some pickled red onions for added crunch and acidic tang. The steamed flour tortillas were soft and pliable. Each bite was a harmony of flavors and textures. A little dollop of the habanero salsa added just enough heat and tomato flavor. I wasn’t a fan of the tomatillo salsa with the tacos but it was delicious with the chips.

The service was quite friendly and my food was brought out to my table. The real sugar Mexican coke was cool and refreshing and a wonderful accompaniment to my summer time lunch. I will definitely return to Dos Gringos the next time I am in the area. Let’s just hope that next time it will be sticker-free.
