Restaurant Review: Wimpy's Original Hamburgers

Food writer Clara Park reviews neighborhood favorite, Wimpy's Original Hamburgers, in Upper Providence Township.

I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a Wimpy’s Hamburger today. While I am no stranger to white tablecloth establishments, I am still a sucker for a great burger and fries. Imagine my excitement when my editor suggested for my next review.

I kept it simple and ordered a cheeseburger combo (with fries and a drink, $6.99) and was blown away by the deliciousness. The meat patty was quite large, juicy and flavorful. The vegetables (lettuce, tomato and onion) were fresh and crisp. There are no mass produced sesame seed buns here, but rather a hearty brioche bun with toothsome crust. The fries were tasty and generously portioned.

There seemed to be quite a lot of options with buffalo hot sauce (chicken wings, chicken fingers and shrimp) so I ordered the smallest amount of buffalo chicken fingers ($5.49) for later. These boneless nibbles were the perfect snack that night. I opted for the spicy (as opposed to mild) sauce on the fingers which also came with traditional sides, blue cheese dressing and sticks of celery. I didn’t find the fingers that fiery but I love spicy food. If you’re feeling a bit apprehensive, stick with the mild sauce.

This burger joint offers plenty of deli items including sandwiches (turkey, roast beef, tuna salad, chicken salad and ham & cheese, $4.99) and wraps (turkey ranch, chicken parmesan, chicken caesar, honey mustard chicken, buffalo chicken, roast beef horsey, $6.49).  The full range of fountain sodas (coke, sprite, minute maid lemonade, root beer, sweetened nestea, $1.59) are available as well as bottled beverages (flavored iced teas and energy drinks abound here, $2 - 2.49). The milkshakes seem to be quite popular (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and black & white, $3.99) but I can never finish a whole cheeseburger, fries and a shake so I didn’t order one.

The décor is very nostalgic—I felt like I was in a scene from American Graffiti. There are black and white tiles, high chairs, vintage Coca-Cola signs and numerous cartoons of hot dogs, burgers and milkshakes. What I particularly love about many of the establishments in Media is that the people are always so genuine and sincere. The woman who brought over my burger and fries came smiling towards my table and reassured me that the burger tasted as good as it looked. The establishment is clean, professional and friendly all at once. Wimpy’s is the type of place you can enjoy around the clock, whether you’re rocking around it or not.
