White Cane Month To Assist The Blind

A resolution declaring October to be White Cane Month in Delaware County was introduced at the Oct. 9 Delaware County Council meeting by Council Chairman Thomas J. McGarrigle, who presented it to (from left) Joe Saunders, of Springfield Lions Club; Springfield Lions President Larry DeMooy; Tom Iannarelli, of Media Lions Club; Marilyn Dugan, Associate Development Director of the Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, based in Chester; John Calhoun, a staff member of the Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired who displayed his white cane; McGarrigle; Antonio Mangabat, District Governor for Lions District 14-A, which includes Delaware County; Lucy Mangabat, a Lioness club member; and Ric Miller, of Western Delaware Valley Lions, Thornbury Township.

White Cane Month is observed to encourage familiarity with the meaning of the white cane, which is used by the blind to enable them to travel independently and to alert motorists to exercise care, thereby avoiding accidents.  Once a year, members of Lions and Lioness clubs in Delaware County join in a campaign with Lions International to offer an opportunity to contribute to the needs of the blind through its White Cane campaign.

Joining in the presentation were (2nd row, from left) Councilmen John P. McBlain and David J. White, Council Vice Chairman Mario J. Civera Jr.and Councilwoman Colleen P. Morrone.
