Delco SPCA Seeks Hurricane Help

The Delaware County SPCA asks for community help before Hurricane Sandy hits.

With Hurricane Sandy, aka Frankenstorm, predicted to be a catastrophic “perfect storm,” the Delaware County SPCA is asking for the community's help before the storm hits.

The most urgent need is short-term foster homes for the 160 animals currently waiting to be adopted at the Adoption Center.

Temporary, one-week foster homes would ensure the safety of the homeless animals, enabling free space in the areas closest to outside windows and doors, keeping the animals in the shelter out of harm’s way.

Anyone interested in temporarily fostering an animal, is asked to visit www.delcospca.org and fill out the Emergency Foster Application visible on the right-hand-side of the homepage or stop in to the Adoption Center to fill out the application.

Animals will be available to be picked up for temporary fostering starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday through 5 p.m. on Sunday and as-needed in to early next week.

To prepare for the storm and the after-effects, the Adoption Center is calling for donations as well. Home Depot and grocery store gift cards, bottled water—both regular and distilled, collapsible dog and cat carriers, towels, blankets and quilts. The organization is also asking for the temporary loan of a generator.

In effort to find homes for as many animals as possible before the storm hits, the Adoption Center is offering $50 off black and black & white animals in its Howl-o-meow Adoption Special as well as a 50 percent off coupon, which can be printed at www.facebook.com/DelcoSPCA. The Adoption Center is open for adoptions from noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

In order to keep your pets safe in the storm, keep them away from windows and doors. Crating erratic or anxious animals is encouraged as animals tend to get unpredictable in natural disasters. Also, make sure pets have collars with an ID and, if you have a dog, a dog license in the event that they escape during the storm.

The Media-based, animal shelter is not an emergency animal boarding facility for owned pets but pet owners are encouraged to call their municipality to see if one is available.

For more information about how you can help, visit www.delcospca.org or call or visit the Delaware County SPCA Adoption Center at 610-566-1370 or stop by at 555 Sandy Bank Road, in Media, during open hours.
