Obituary: Doris Stettler, Co-Founder of Deaf Hearing Communication Centre

Doris W. Stettler, 95, a long time resident of Springfield, and most-recently a resident of Media, died peacefully at her home on Nov. 8, 2011.

Doris W. Stettler, 95, a long time resident of Springfield, and most-recently a resident of Media, died peacefully at her home on Nov. 8, 2011. Doris was born on Dec. 1, 1915 and graduated from West Philadelphia High School in 1933. She worked at PSFS in the Real Estate Department where she met her loving husband, Arthur W. Stettler.

Doris will be remembered as a woman who gave selflessly to her family, friends, church and community. In 1972 she co-founded the Deaf Hearing Communication Centre, Inc. (DHCC), which will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2012. In 1977, she was the recipient of the Benjamin Rush Award being recognized by the Delaware County Medical Society. She has been an active member of Covenant United Methodist Church in Springfield for 54 years, where she started the Reassurance Program that reaches out to homebound individuals. She served as President of Springfield Woman’s Club, was a Trustee at Covenant Church, is a Lioness, and was President of the Home and School Association at .

Doris was named Exemplary Volunteer of the Year and recognized on Springfield’s Volunteer Memorial Wall in 1997. She also received the Girl Scout Woman-of-the-Year award in 1987 and the Springfield Historical Society Person-of-the-Year award in 1984. She was honored by the Springfield in 1978.

Doris was an avid Phillies fan and loved deep-sea fishing. She also enjoyed dancing, ice-skating, bowling, cooking and reading. She vacationed annually with family in Ocean City, NJ and enjoyed trips to Australia, Hawaii, Mexico, New Zealand, Fiji, Alaska and the Panama Canal. Doris was also a devoted Kentucky Derby fan, especially being a Kentucky Colonel.

Doris was a devoted wife for 68 years to Arthur; loving mother of Richard A. Stettler, Jean D. Stettler and Barbara (Stettler) & Donald A. Cadge; grandmother of Wendy, Amy and Laura Cadge; great-grandmother of Nate Elliott-Cadge; cousin to Carol (Woodside) Brown and David Woodside; nephews, Steve, Sam and David Stettler.

Memorial service: Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, 11:30 a.m. at Covenant United Methodist Church, 212 West Springfield Rd., Springfield, PA 19064. Visitation: at 10 a.m. prior to the service at Covenant. Interment is private.
