Get Out: Think Spring with Birds & Flowers, Celebrate the Presidents

Check out these picks for things to do this Presidents Day weekend in the greater Media Patch area.

It’s Thursday, so it’s time to think about the weekend plans. Thanks to our nation’s founding fathers, schools and many workplaces are closed on Monday for Presidents Day. There’s plenty to do over this long holiday weekend, from enjoying the outdoors and nature's creatures, to celebrating our Presidential history.

 

1.Birds and Orchids

Where/When: ; Avian Life of the Backyard at 11 a.m. and Raptors! On Tour at 1 p.m. on Saturday; Linvilla Orchards is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily

Why Go: What’s better in the middle of winter than hearing birds chirping and flowers blooming? Learn what birds are passing through your backyard, and hear how to make your backyard an avian destination. Experience birds of prey, such as falcons and buzzards, up close and personal, and watch them in flight. Also in the garden center, check out the orchid show and sale that runs through March 16.

2. Owl Prowl and Night Hike

Where/When: ; Owl Prowl, Friday, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; Night Hike, Saturday, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Why Go: Learn more about owls and the myths associated with them. Following an informative indoor program, educator Sue Lucas will lead a hike to listen for calls of eastern screech owls. Adventurous types looking for some fresh air and spectacular night views of the Arboretum, take the night hike that includes moderate to steep trails. Refreshments will be served after the hike. The hike is suitable for teens and adults.

Pricing: Owl Prowl, $8 for members, $12 for non-members (pre-registration required); Night Hike, $5 for members, $8 for non-members (pre-registration required)

 

3. Hearts of Love Bridal Shower

Where/When: , 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday

Why Go: Engaged couples, and couples "just browsing," will have the opportunity to learn more about Ten Thousand Villages' gift registry. Couples can also find a photographer, wedding food specialist, florist and musician.

Pricing: Free

 

4. Movie Night

Where/When: Regal Edgemont Square 10, all weekend (check Web site for titles and showtimes)

Why Go: This weekend, movie-goers are in store for the release of a comedy, a thriller and a science fiction film. Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, starring Martin Lawrence, will debut, as well as I Am Number Four and Unknown, starring Liam Neeson.

Pricing: Adults, $11; Children, $8 (Add a few dollars for the 3-D movies, and save a few bucks if you go before 3 p.m.)

 

5. Celebrate the Presidents

Where/When: National Constitution Center, Philadelphia; Saturday through Monday; check Web site for program times

Why Go: The National Constitution Center will celebrate our country’s 44 Commanders in Chief throughout President’s Day weekend. Programs include "Hail to the Chief" quiz game, and "Meet the Presidents," where visitors can meet historic presidential re-enactors and snap a photo or two.

Pricing: $12 for 12 years old and up, $8 under 12 years old, and $11 for 65 and over. Presidential programs are free with museum admission.
