The council also honored two police chiefs for their years of service at its meeting Tuesday.

The announced at its meeting Tuesday that the Delaware County Library system received a $15,000 grant from Verizon to fund a portable computer lab using Apple iPads.

David Belanger, director of the DelCo Library System, said the portable lab will be used to help children and adults develop critical thinking skills. Because the lab is portable it will also allow training to be done inside the libraries as well as outside the libraries at childcare centers and schools.

Police Chiefs Accept Resolution

In separate county council news, the council honored two police chiefs with a resolution for their longtime service to the community.

Parkside Borough Police Chief John M. Egan was honored for his more than four decades serving the community as a police officer.

The resolution stated that Egan has served as Parkside chief since 1999 after a 30-year career as a member of the East Lansdowne department, where he served as sergeant from 1986.

Egan has been elected to serve as president of the Delaware County Association of Police Chiefs for 2011.

Trainer Borough Police Chief James J. Magaw was also honored as the outgoing president of the Delaware County Association of Police Chiefs.

The resolution stated that Magaw has been a dedicated member of the law enforcement profession since joining the Trainer Police Department in 1975 as a patrolman. He has served as chief since 1993 while simultaneously serving as a volunteer fire fighter.

Magaw and Egan accepted their resolutions from County Council.

Scholarship Fund Basketball Game Announced

In more separate council news, the countywide all-star basketball game was announced.

The 2011 Hero Scholarship Basketball Games will be held on April 1 at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield to benefit the Delaware County Hero Scholarship Fund.

Collingdale Borough Police Chief Bob Adams, who is also the chairman of the Hero Basketball Committee, said two games, featuring seniors, will be played that evening.

The all-star girls game will be at 6:30 p.m. and the all-star boys will be at 8:30 p.m. Each team will consist of 16 players and the players will come from public, parochial and private high schools in the county. The teams will be East Girls and West Girls and East Boys and West Boys.

The scholarship fund was founded in 1977 by county council to provide scholarships to children of police, fire fighters and emergency personnel who have died in the line of duty, according to Adams.

Adams said last year’s game saw 500 paid attendants and they raised about $4,000. The goal this year is to raise about $5,000 or $6,000, Adams said.

He said last year’s boys game was definitely exciting with three overtimes and a final score of 104-102. Adams laughed that the scoreboard only went to 99 so the score was shown as 04-02.

“It’s really the best of the best of Delaware County who play in this game,” Adams said.

Players are currently being determined as area school playoffs wrap up, he said.

But the names currently on the list are the same names being featured in area newspapers and Web sites, Adams said.
