Edgmont Twp. Approves Dance Studio Relocation Application

The Board of Supervisors voted 'yes' during a public hearing on Wednesday night.

The held their regular monthly meeting Wednesday evening, which included a special public conditional use hearing. The issue on the table was the relocation of the Springton Dance Academy studio space.

Currently, the Academy is located at 5050 West Chester Pike, and the application looks to move it to 5129 West Chester Pike at Ridley Creek Plaza.

The owner of 5129 Cynthia Zarelli, partner Anthony DiLoreto, and dance instructor Kim Forlini, were on hand to present exhibits and answer questions about the proposed project.

Issues addressed by the board included parking and traffic patterns, hours of operation, the safety of the students, and future plans for events held at the studio.

Following comprehensive testimony by the academy representatives, the board voted to approve the application under certain circumstances.

Chairman Ronald Gravina requested the academy follow traffic patterns that are satisfactory to the township, to ensure young students being dropped off remain out of harm’s way. Gravina added that no recitals are to be held at the studio, and also that the academy have a defibrillator available at all times in case of emergency.

In his presentation, DiLoreto assured that, as per the township’s previous recommendation, a defibrillator has been acquired.

"There are some phenomenal athletes coming to this studio, but even some of them can suffer arrhythmias at the young age of 15 years old," DiLoreto said.

DiLoreto also added the studio will be designed to limit music volume, so as to not interrupt nearby businesses.

Springton Dance Academy was established in 1992, offers classes in classical ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, and other dance forms, and won Main Line Today's "Best of the Main Line" award this year.

Parking Issue at New Farmer's Market

In other unrelated board matters, Vice Chairman Joe Conan expressed concern regarding the Farmer's Market held at the Pennsylvania Resources Council at 3606 Providence Road.

"Parking seems to be an issue and there are concerns about visitors’ safety," said Conan.

The board assured it will ask the state park to look into the concerns and rectify the situation.
