The council also presented the first Community Service Award to a long time resident and business owner.

A proposal to put signs for educational and promotional use around Media Borough saying, "Young Lungs at Play. This is a Tobacco-Free Zone," was brought before the at its meeting Thursday night.

Robert Scott, borough solicitor, said council should compile a list of potential locations where they’d like the signs to be placed and vote on the matter at the April meeting.

Councilman James Cunningham said the signs use the word "zone" and legally speaking there is no local "no smoking zone" in the borough. There is no smoking on school property and the school district enforces that but a citation cannot be given on the matter.

Council President Peter Alyanakian said the signs would be educational and could not be enforced legally.

The council will discuss the matter further at the April meeting.

Council Presents First Community Service Award

The council also presented the first Community Service Award to Bill Gross, a long time Media resident and business owner.

Councilwoman Dawn Roe said the Community Service Award is a new program, open to anyone who demonstrates excellent community service for the benefit of the town. It will be awarded quarterly and nominations can be made through the Media Borough Web site.

Roe said she was pleased that Gross was the first recipient of the award. Gross’ father was the owner and founder of B. Gross Menswear and Gross ran it with his two brothers from 1944 until 2006, Roe said. He was a member of the Rose Tree Media School Board for 17 years and was also a member of several other boards and committees.

Gross received his award and thanked the council for the honor.

He said he came to Media with his family when he was 10 months old and he’s now approaching 90 years old.

"So you do the math for how long I’ve been here," Gross said.

He said his store has become a great meeting place where residents not only do business but also just chat with each other.

"I love Media. I love the people of Media and the people here have been more than kind to me," Gross said.

Gross’ wife, children, grandchildren and store employees were in attendance to watch him receive his award.
