Middletown Service Tax Could Ease Rt. 452, Rt. 1 Congestion

Township council is expected to vote on the ordinance at its Nov. 25 meeting.

Middletown Township Council will propose a Local Service Tax and the money generated would go toward traffic improvements at the Route 1 and Route 452 intersection, according to township finance committee meeting minutes.

Middletown Township Vice Chair Mark Kirchgasser said the tax would be an annual $42 flat tax per person employed in Middletown who earns more than $12,000 per year, according to the Delaware County News Network, and would generate between $350,000 to $400,000 annually.

Twenty-five percent of the generated revenue would be required by law to go toward emergency services in the township and the remainder would go toward improvements at the congested intersection, according to the meeting minutes.

Currently, the township's operating budget can not absorb the costs needed to make improvements to the heavily traveled intersection and new revenue was must be generated,  Kirchgasser told the Delaware County News Network.
