Patch Picks: Salute to Delco’s Working Men and Women

Summer has come to an end, much to the chagrin of many of the kids going back to school. For those of us in the workforce, most of our vacation time is all used up, and it’s back to the grind we go. Many of us, though, will enjoy one last blast of the season this Monday, on Labor Day. It’s a day set aside to kick back with family, friends and neighbors, and celebrate our daily achievements at work. Media Patch asked around town to hear your ideas on who should be most honored this Labor Day.

Union Workers

They are, afterall, the reason we began celebrating the national holiday. From carpenters to painters, electricians to communication employees, labor unions are what help keep daily life moving in Media, in Delaware County, and in all of the country.

Police/Firefighters/EMTs

They are the courageous men and women who will stop at nothing to ensure our safety from criminals and danger, and respond in emergency situations like fires and health emergencies. The all-volunteer fire and ambulance companies in the greater Media Patch area are in dire need of more help, so stop by your local station to find out how you can volunteer.

Council Members/Political Leaders

They are the decision makers and the voice of the people. Media Borough Council, Delaware County Council, our Senators and Congressmen and women, and other political leaders have an impact on our lives each and every day. They face tough decisions, the occasional scrutiny, and are consistently striving to make living in and visiting Media the most pleasurable experience as possible.

Business Leaders and Owners

The Borough’s business leaders, including the Media Business Authority board and the MBA’s members, are the backbone of our economy. The MBA helps keep Media’s downtown business district thriving financially. They are constantly collaborating to create new and exciting events that are attractive and unique to both the regulars and the new visitors.

Volunteers

In a shaky economy, charity donations and volunteerism has been down a bit, and people must work several jobs. Many still make the time to volunteer for a worthy cause, even if it’s for a few hours a week. Organizations like the American Red Cross, Delco SPCA and Animal Rescue Foundation, the Delaware County Literacy Council and senior citizen centers count on volunteers to keep up with daily operation.

Anti-Poverty Organizations

For more than three decades, the Community Action Agency of Delaware County has served people in need of financial assistance. The non-profit organization provides emergency shelter for homeless individuals or families. They give aid for rent or utility bills. In addition, they help people out of crisis situations, provide work readiness training, basic educational sills, life skills and childcare services.
