Request for Residential Parking, Temporary Storage Container Usage Discussed at UP Twp. Meeting

The Upper Providence Township Council handled mostly regular business at its meeting Thursday night.

The Council handled mostly regular business at its meeting Thursday night with little fanfare.

The submitted its monthly report stating there were 1207 total police calls for service, 553 motor vehicle violations, 14 parking violations, 27 summary violations all in January. Of the 1207 calls for service, 376 were related to traffic citations, which was the highest count of complaints. Traffic enforcement-summonses was next with 181 and the third highest was traffic enforcement-traffic detail with a 90 count, according to the police department report.

In unrelated township news, the council approved the first reading of an ordinance regarding PODS or temporary storage containers at residences.

Council Chairman Ed Bierling said the ordinance would limit the amount of time a storage container can sit in a resident’s driveway or on the property.

"This is so it wouldn’t become a permanent storage facility on the property," he said.

In separate council news, a resident requested that the council look into requiring permit parking or residential parking during the evening hours on Green Hill Road. The resident said that employees from surrounding restaurants park on the street, which only allows parking on one side, making it difficult for residents to find parking when they return home from work. Some of the surrounding restaurants do not allow their employees to park in the restaurant parking lot so they then find parking along nearby residential streets, the resident said.

Bierling said the council would look into the matter.

In other township news, the township offices will be closed on Feb. 21 for President’s Day however trash and recycling will be collected as usual on that day.  The summer recreation program held at Rose Tree Elementary School is now taking registrations. Residents can register through the township and the program often sells out so it is best to register early, Township Manager Ed Cashman said. Click here to view the registration form.
