Slight Decline in Media, Townships' Populations

Patch analyzes census date released statewide Wednesday.

Down several hundred people, Media Borough, Middletown Township and Upper Providence Township experienced population losses over the past 10 years, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Media proved to be the most stable, as it only lost 206 people, with a reported population of 5,327 in 2010. That distinction is fairly relative as Middletown dropped by 257 people, and Upper Providence by 367. Respectively, there are 15,807 and 10,142 people now in Middletown and Upper Providence.

True, the overall population barely changed, but there were alterations within ethnic groups. In general, the white population declined—especially in the townships, which both saw about a 500-person decrease. Except in Middletown Township, which exhibited a slight gain, the African American population was also down.

Other minority populations increased since 2000. In all three communities, the Asian populations rose incrementally. The same was true for those who culturally identified themselves as Hispanic.

In Delaware County, the population rose 1.5 percent, while in Pennsylvania it rose 3.4 percent.
