Two French Films at Media Theatre for Bastille Day Celebration

Celebrate Media's Bastille Day July 9 and enjoy 2 French films at Media Theatre

The Media Theatre will join in Media's Bastille Day celebration Saturday, July 9. Two French films will be shown--one for the children and one about children.

At 2 p.m. audiences can enjoy a few episodes of "Les Aventures de Tintin", an animated series based comic strips by Georges Remi, who wrote under the pen name Herge. Very popular in France when published in La Petit Vingtieme, a children's supplement, the series was eventually published into a successful magazine and adapted for film, radio, television, and theatre. It's set during the 20th century where Tintin, the young Belgian reporter, is aided in his adventures by his faithful fox terrier. Other characters are the incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson and the hearing impaired Professor Calculus. There is slapstick humor for the young audience members and much adventure.

At 7:30 p.m., Louis Malle's brilliant Oscar nominated film "Au Revoir Les Enfants (Goodbye Children)" will be screened. The 1987 prize winner at the Venice Film Festival is a memorable account of a Catholic boarding school which seems to be a safe haven for Jewish youth during WWII until a new student arrives. Malle based the film on events which actually happened to him during the war. An inspiring film which the New York Times referred to as "moving and memorable." Its Oscar nominations were for Screenplay and Best Foreign Film.
