Local College Students Receive Honors, Awards

A list of a few local students who recently received academic accolades.

Below is a list of a few local students who recently received accolades from their college or university.

Dean's List at DePaul University

Stephen Carr, of Media, made the Dean's List at DePaul University for the winter quarter of 2012. In order to qualify for the Dean's List at DePaul, students must earn above a 3.0 grade point average on a four point scale.

Summer Scholars Program

Media resident Kate McGovern, a chemistry and interdisciplinary health services major, will work with Jose Cerda, Ph.D. on their topic, " UV/Vis Spectroelectrochemical Study of Horseradish Peroxidase in the Presence of Fluoride Ion" at Saint Joseph's University as a member of the Summer Scholars Program.

The faculty-mentored research and creative projects program, which runs for 11 weeks from May until August, requires students to work exclusively with a faculty member to produce a written description of their research that will be published by the University, and to present their findings next spring during the Celebration of Student Achievement event. For their work, students receive a stipend of $3,200, on-campus housing, and the opportunity to participate in social and educational programs.

Research topics range from local and national issues in the sciences, business, education and history to extended analysis of literature and fine arts.

Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society at Scranton

Molly Scheuerman, of Media, was recently inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society for education at The University of Scranton. The Sigma Chi chapter was installed at the Jesuit university in 1992. It joins more than 500 chapters around the world in fidelity to four cherished ideals: humanity, science, service and toil. Scheuerman is a junior at University of Scranton.

Women's Business Honor Society at Scranton

Catherine Erbicella, of Media, was among The University of Scranton students inducted into Omega Beta Sigma, the women's business honor society. Founded at the Jesuit university in 1982, this organization is for students who major or minor in business, have at least sophomore standing, and have a grade point average of 3.25. Erbicella is a junior at Scranton.

Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges

Lauren Mantegna, of Media, a senior majoring in marketing at York College of Pennsylvania, has been named to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Mantegna was also named to the Senior Honor Society.

Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology

William Vance, of Media, has been named to Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology 2012 Spring Dean’s List. A student with a grade point average of 3.25 or above is placed on the Dean’s List at the end of each semester. Vance is a sophomore.
