Media Elementary Facebook Group Discusses Relocation Options

A Facebook group was started following the announcement that Media Elementary School will need to relocate its students in September due to pending construction at the school.

A Facebook group called, Media Elementary School Families, has been created following Monday's announcement that due to structural issues with the building, the .

The building is not a danger to anyone and the students and faculty are completely safe.

The Facebook group, which had 112 members Wednesday morning, was created as a general space for the Media Elementary community but will also address concerns and questions regarding the pending relocation and construction.

Superintendent James Wigo told Media Patch Monday that an engineering team determined that a 100-year-old roof truss in the school building needs to be repaired and in order to effectively make the repairs, the building needs to be unoccupied.

Wigo said the district is anticipating the 2012-2013 school year to be in another location and all relocation possibilities are currently being investigated.

According to the Facebook group, Wigo spoke at a Media Elementary PTG meeting Tuesday night and several temporary school options were mentioned including Barrall Field, Nativity BVM, St. Kevins in Springfield and other open space available within the borough.

Whatever space is decided upon the temporary school must be up to code, according to the Facebook page's creator Amy Kleiman's most recent post.

The option would use modular classrooms, which would be up to code, and have been used at many school's in the area.

According to Kleiman's post, the district hopes to have a location decision upon returning from Spring Break, which is April 10.

According to Media, Pa. News, school district officials and Media Borough Council members are also meeting to discuss options.

Barrall Field is owned by the school district and leased back to Media Borough for recreational use in exchange for maintenance of the property, according to Media, Pa. News.
