Whiz Kid: Kelsey Tierney

The Springton Lake 8th grader is dancing her way to world-class perfection in ballet.

Each week, Media Patch will feature individual kids, teens, youth groups, and sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments in the new feature called Whiz Kid. We also want to hear suggestions on who you'd like to see featured as a Whiz Kid, so send some nominations our way. This week's Whiz Kid is Kelsey Tierney, a rising ballet star from Media who is already making her mark.

Accomplishments: Tierney has studied ballet for seven years at the in Media. She practices five days a week, plus additional hours during competition and performance times. She has competed six times, and performed in seven productions. The eighth grader has placed as one of the top 12 finalists in the Philadelphia Regional YAGP, or Youth America Grand Prix. YAGP is the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competition held annually around the world, and in New York City. Tierney will compete in the YAGP finals, as well as, perform at the annual YAGP gala in NYC in March.

Why she’s awesome: Even though she logs hours upon hours of ballet training, Tierney has maintained honors in school. While much of her time is spent in the studio perfecting her craft, she also enjoys art and taking care of animals. Tierney’s mom describes her daughter as "a very disciplined, focused child, who plans her days out so well, and wastes not a minute." Tierney is considering cyber school to free up more time to practice. Once finished schooling, she says she hopes to then dance for a major company.

(Media Patch recently featured the Academy of International Ballet in Media.

Editor's note: Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout or did your local hockey team take the championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kid honoree. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.
