Penncrest Girls' Lax Wins for First Time this Season

The Lions received a nice boost of confidence with the victory.

needed a boost from somewhere, anywhere. The Lions’ girls lacrosse team had struggled in their first three games this season, on the scoreboard and a little in the confidence area. Lions’ coach Meghan McGee was hoping for an answer and a positive move forward in Penncrest’s game at Marple Newtown Tuesday night under the lights.

McGee received a nice dose of both. The Lions entered the victory column for the first time this season with a 9-6 win over Marple Newtown to improve to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Central League, while the loss dropped Marple Newtown to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the league.

"The first win feels good," McGee said. "The difference between this game and our last couple of games is that we played with an intensity and confidence we didn’t play with the last two games. We actually played kind of scared the last few games. This game was different. This game we played with confidence. We’re still learning and growing. This is a young team filled with sophomores and juniors. This was nice. We needed this."

Penncrest used a variety of scorers. Junior Christy Bond led the Lions with a hat trick, scoring a team-high three goals, followed by two goals from Maggie King, and one goal each from Cara Lord, Haley Altus, Patrice Coleman and Caroline Nichols.

Penncrest never trailed. The Lions took off on a 3-1 lead and held a 4-3 edge at halftime. The Lions then scored four of the next five goals to take command of the game, 8-4, before the Tigers mounted a late charge, making it a respectable 9-6 game.

"The important thing for us is that we played together," Bond said. "We worked real well. We had to win this game. It’s the kind of win that brings your confidence up, and we needed it. Winning this game certainly puts us in a better position in the league."

Penncrest had to keep a constant vigil on Marple Newtown’s Devon Miller, who scored a game-high four goals. The quicksilver senior was all over the field, causing problems, penetrating Penncrest’s defense and peppering the goalie with an assortment of shots that reached the net from high in the corners, to bouncers that found their way past the goal line.

For Marple Newtown, it was a matter of getting the ball on Miller’s stick. For Penncrest, it was a possession game that denied that from happening.
