Health & Fitness

Strength in Numbers

Exercising with a group can keep you motivated and encouraged and help you to reach your goals. Find out how and then get involved.

This past week I had a participant in one of my group exercise sessions approach me with a guilty look on her face. She looked like a third grader, eyes focused on the floor, about to explain to the teacher that the dog had eaten her homework.

What she told me instead was that she would be on vacation the following week and would miss (gasp) three sessions! It made me realize how much working with a group can change someone's mentality about exercise....and whether they even do it or not.

When I work with participants in group fitness classes I am often intrigued by what I hear and how the psychology of group exercise works. I have classes where other participants begin to worry if a specific individual fails to show up for a couple of sessions. I have participants who have formed wonderful relationships with one another and would not dream of missing a session (whether this is due to the physical or relational aspects of class is not completely clear).

Working out alone is old news. Get off the treadmill and find somebody (or somebodies) to work with. Here are some reasons that working out as a part of a small group or duo can be even more beneficial for your health and fitness:

  1. Mentally and physically healthier: Studies have been conducted that show that those who train with a group (even a very small group) are less likely to suffer from depression, experience greater physical and mental well-being in early stages of cancer, and are more easily able to create long lasting exercise routines. These studies have shown a surge in endorphins post-workout that is higher in those that exercised with other than in those that exercise alone.
  2. Motivation: A group atmosphere provides an amazing amount of motivation, as well as encouragement, accountability, and positive competition. When we work with a group we are more likely to get there and we are often pushed by one another to perform at our highest potential. Group settings can be extremely encouraging and fun, and can make the time go much more quickly.
  3. Community: What could be better than doing something healthy for yourself AND meeting like-minded individuals in the process? Groups are often made up of people who have common goals and interests and can lead to some fantastic new friendships.
  4. Support: Women especially tend to exercise more when they perceive a high level of support in their lives. Fitting exercise into everyday life and focusing on health can often be tricky, and the support of a group can be just the inspiration that is needed.
  5. Having the help of an instructor: Many people join a gym and then simply bounce around from machine to machine with little thought or direction. This lack of balance can often lead to injury, boredom, or limited results. Having the direction of a leader delivers the full experience, including warm-ups, solid routines, and cool-downs and stretching.
  6. Reduced cost: Working out with a friend or in a group tends to be much more cost efficient than working out one-on-one with a personal trainer. Most personal training sessions run anywhere from $65 to $90 per hour, while joining a group workout can bring the cost down as low as $5 to $10 per session.

Group workouts can be found anywhere and for anyone. Whether your interests include running, walking, high intensity circuit workouts, or cycling there is a group for you. Make sure you choose an activity that you will enjoy and try one session first to see if it's a fit before committing to a large package. Getting involved in group fitness and exercise will help you to acquire a very positive habit and to stick with it.

Peace thru strength offers several groups that may help you to stay motivated and achieve your goals. We have groups throughout the week for moms with young kids, groups for kids ages 6 to 12, groups for those looking for an intense workout, groups for older adults, and groups for teenage girls.
