Chili Challenge; Pinewood Derby; Open House Among Weekend Events [Get Out]

It's a busy week and weekend in and around Media Patch. See what's going on.

There are lots of events happenings this weekend. It's a weekend full of community events. View a film on fracking, taste chili and chocolate, cheer on the pinewood derby or visit a local school or fitness center's open house. And if that's not enough, see who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame—at O'Hara.

Gasland Part II Film Screening

  • When: Friday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. 
  • Where: Media Friends Meeting, 125 W. 3rd St. in Media 
  • Why Go: Transition Town Media, Food and Water Watch PA, and Delaware Riverkeeper Network will be present this film follow-up to the Oscar nominated Gasland and panel discussion. Take a dark humored and deeper broader look at the dangers of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the controversial method of extracting natural gas and oil.
  • Cost: Free

Chili, Chocolate, Home Brew Challenge

  • When: Saturday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.
  • Where: Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County, 145 W. Rose Tree Road, Media
  • Why Go: Come and taste the delicious creations of chili or chocolate dishes, and some home brew, too. You really can't go wrong with any of the above. Satisfy your thirst, warm your tummy and fill a sweet tooth all at the same time. 
  • Cost: Adults: $15 for seven tastes; ages 12 and under: $8 for five tastes ($50 maximum per family of four). Tickets available at the door.

St. Mary Magdalen School Open House 

  • When: Sunday, Jan. 26 at 12:30 p.m. and Monday, Jan. 27 from 9 to 10 a.m.
  • Where: St. Mary Magdalen School, 2400 N. Providence Rd., Media
  • Why Go: All current and prospective families can tour the school, meet the faculty and administration, mingle with students and families and learn about the school's happenings. Monday's tours offer an opportunity for prospective families to see the classrooms in action.
Boy Scouts Pinewood Derby
  • When: Saturday, Jan. 25 at noon
  • Where: Springfield Mall, 1250 Baltimore Pike, Springfield
  • Why Go: Racers ready? On your mark. Conestoga District Boy Scout teams will participate in a Pinewood Derby Daze. Races start at noon in Center Court.
  • Cost: Free
Cardinal O'Hara High School Hall of Fame Dinner
  • When: Saturday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.
  • Where: O'Hara's Gym, 1701 S. Sproul Road, Springfield
  • Why Go: The evening will feature Mass, cocktails, dinner and the induction of the '73 championship football team, Trish Juhline '99, Harrison (Bud) Gardler (honorary) and George Stratts (honorary) to name only a few of the honorees. 
  • Cost: $50
Inner Drive Fitness Open House 
  • When: Saturday, Jan. 25 at 8, 9, 10 or 11 a.m.
  • Where: 210 South Newtown Street Road, Newtown Square
  • Why Go: Commit to getting fit this year at Inner Drive Fitness, with high quality indoor cycling and fitness classes in a supportive, community-oriented studio setting.
  • Cost: Free
