Militia Muster, Sensory Films, Bacon Day Among Weekend Events [Get Out]

It's a busy week and weekend in and around Media Patch. See what's going on.

There are lots of things happening this holiday weekend. It's a weekend full of community events. Learn about the British invasion of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia at a Militia Muster. Or if you have a taste for bacon, check out the winery that offers bacon paired wines or take a bike tour through the Brandywine River Valley.

Philadelphia Campaign, Militia Muster and Concert

  • When: Saturday, August 31 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Where: Colonial Plantation, 3900 N. Sandy Flash Dr., Newtown Square
  • Why Go: The British have landed and the local militia is mustering to defend Pennsylvania. Learn more about the British conquest of Philadelphia. Enjoy a historic conversation with Bruce Mowday, author of "September 11, 1777: Washington's Defeat at Brandywine Dooms Philadelphia," at 2 p.m. and then enjoy a concert at 7 p.m. with The Dill Pickle Old Time Orchestra. Bring a picnic lunch/dinner or purchase refreshments on-site.
  • Cost: $12 for adults, $8 for children and seniors
National Bacon Day at the Winery
  • When: Aug. 30, 31 and Sept. 1 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. 
  • Where: Penns Woods Winery, 124 Beaver Valley Road in Chadds Ford 
  • Why Go: If you are a bacon lover, this is an event for you. Five bacon dishes will be paired with five wines. Each dish is prepared and created by local food artisans. Find the menu here

Sensory Friendly Films
  • When: Saturday, Aug. 31 at 10 a.m.
  • Where: AMC Marple 10, 400 South State Road in Springfield
  • Why Go: This unique opportunity for families affected by autism and other disabilities offers much more than a movie. Watch Planes in the movie theater with the lights up, the sound turned down and audience members are invited to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing. Guests are welcome to bring their own gluten-free or special snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. Check here for more upcoming screenings in the fall.

Delaware Valley Bicycle Club's Brandywine Tour

  • When: Sunday, Sept. 1 at 7 a.m.
  • Where: Popcopson Elementary School, Popcopson, PA
  • Why Go: Bicycle through the Brandywine River Valley, crossing six major creeks and traversing much of the area where Revolutionary War troops marched and fought at the Battle of the Brandywine. Finish the tour with pizza at about 11 a.m.
  • Cost: Pre-registration $25, day of $30

Corpse!

  • When: Aug. 29 through Oct. 6
  • Where: Hedgerow Theatre, 64 Rose Valley Road, Rose Valley
  • Why Go: This comedy thriller takes place in 1936 when an out-of-work actor devises what he thinks is a foolproof scheme to get his hands on his wealthy identical twin’s fortune. But pulling it off requires murdering his brother and of course, things don’t go as planned.
  • Cost: Tickets are $32 for adults; $29 for seniors; $10 for students

Healing Prayer Service

  • When: Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 7:30 p.m. 
  • Where: Triniity Episcopal Church, 301 College Ave. in Swarthmore 
  • Why Go: On the first Tuesday of each month, Trinity Episcopal Church invites everyone in the community to this services, as a way to come and receive prayers for health, situations, or for a way to express concern for any event or life issue.
