Delaware County properties will be on the block for the monthly sheriff's sale Friday.
More than 144 properties are on the list for Friday's Delaware County sheriff's sale. However, many on the list have been postponed and some were settled, leaving about 127 properties on the block. There are zero properties listed within Media Patch. However, there are a few properties in Media Patch that have been continued to Friday's sheriff's sale: Sales start at 11 a.m. in the County Council Meeting Room on the first floor of the Government Center Building, Delaware County Court House, Front St. & Veterans Square in Media. There is a minimum total bid amount that must be exceeded for each property to sell. The county is participating in Bike to Work week starting Monday.
The Delaware County Government will be celebrating Bike to Work Week, which starts Monday, May 13. The county is holding a celebration of the week on Friday, May 17 in Media. Those looking to participate in the ride can meet at the county courthouse at 8:30 a.m. Refreshments and prizes will be available. In a release from the county's planning department, the celebration is part of an effort to "help make others aware of alternative means of commuting ... to avoid gas and parking expenses ... to minimize pollution ... to exercise and have fun." Local governments are preparing for the start of a new West Nile Virus season.
It's that time of the year again—mosquito season. Area governments are urging residents to take precautions to avoid West Nile Virus. Both Montgomery and Chester counties have already issued out a release offering residents tips and precautions on the virus. Last year, 60 human cases tested positive in Pennsylvania and four died, according to Pennsylvania's West Nile Virus Control Program. But good news comes to the Southeastern Pennsylvania area: $727,010 in grant money was acquired for West Nile surveillance and prevention this year for Philadelphia, Montgomery, Delaware, Chester, and Bucks counties, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. Honor Flight Philadelphia, the local affiliate of the national volunteer organization dedicated to taking World War II Veterans to see the WWII Monument and other Washington, D.C. monuments dedicated to veterans, is looking for veterans for their next trip. The group is taking WWII veterans to Washington on June 15. Delaware County Council Chairman Tom McGarrigle presented the 2013 State of the County address this week.
Delaware County Council Chairman Tom McGarrigle presented the 2013 State of the County address at a Delaware County Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Towne House Restaurant in Media on April 9. McGarrigle highlighted economic success stories and presented an update on the Local Economic Development (LED) strategy for the future. McGarrigle listed many economic "silver linings" in Delaware County including redevelopment of the refineries, new retail stores in Upper Darby, the Quarry Development in Haverford, new hotels coming to Springfield, Tinicum and Ridley, and the U.S. Open coming to Merion Golf Club in Haverford. 12-year-old Bailey O'Neill, who died from injuries sustained during a playground bullying incident, will be honored by the Philadelphia Phillies during their home game against the Red Sox on May 29.
The Philadelphia Phillies have announced they will dedicate their home game on May 29 to the memory of 12-year-old Bailey O'Neill, who died as a result of injuries sustained during a playground bullying incident in March. "We extended the invite to the O'Neill family, and they graciously accepted," said Scott Palmer, Public Affairs Director for the Philadelphia Phillies. See what the life expectancy is for people in your area.
Does where you live in Pennslyvania impact how long your life will be? According to a new study, the answer is "yes, but really not by all that much around here." The Institute for Health Metics and Evaluation looked at the life expectancy gap between men and women cross the country, including in the Greater Philadelphia Area, and broke down the numbers based on the average life expectancy per county. The biggest disparity between the life expectancy of women and men in the area came from Philadelphia, where women outlived men by an average of 7.7 years. Its a shame that DelCo is doing nothing to become a more bike friendly county. A great example is that Malin Rd was milled and resurface, and then milled again in a few locations. That makes it completely unusable for bike commuting which leaves the next option of having to ride on Bryn Mawr ave or 320 to get to Rt 3. A little thought and they could have left a few feet on each side for cyclists.   more ›
