Delaware County Veterans Memorial Dedicated

First US Secretary of Homeland Security, former Pa. Governor and Veteran Tom Ridge speaks on moving freedom forward.

Delaware County's Veterans Memorial in Newtown Square was dedicated and honored in a ceremony Saturday amongst hundreds of people. Several people spoke and were thanked during the ceremony including former Pa. Gov. Tom Ridge, Pa. Gov. Tom Corbett, U.S. Congressman Pat Meehan, Vice Chairman of Delaware County Council Mario Civera, DVCMA Founding Member Linda Houldin and landowner and major donor Claude de Botton. The Delaware County Veterans Memorial is located off of West Chester Pike/Route 3 and Alice Grim Blvd. in Newtown Square, Edgmont Township.

Delco Vets Memorial Dedication Set for Saturday

The Delaware County Veterans Memorial dedication in Edgmont Township will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The Delaware County Veterans Memorial in Newtown Square will be dedicated in a ceremony at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The memorial, honoring past, present, and future Delco veterans, has nine columns, each representing a war or conflict with quotations engraved from presidents, generals and local veterans of that time period, according to the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association (DCVMA) website. The Wall of Prayers pays tribute to the soldiers and veterans from Newtown Square and those killed in action from Delaware County. The Master of Ceremonies at the dedication ceremony will be Benjamin Patton, author of Growing of Patton and grandson of General George S. 'West Chester Pike' Book Shows the Road's History

A local author compiled Route 3's history between Chester County and Philadelphia.

A local author took on the story of West Chester Pike or Route 3 in the book obviously titled West Chester Pike. The book is part of Arcadia Publishing’s book series Images of America, and explores the 20-mile stretch of road’s more than 400-year history, according to the Delaware County News Network. “I love looking at those old pictures to see what things looked like 100 years ago, 150 years ago,” author Stephen Edgcumbe told the News Network. “When West Chester Pike was mostly a dirt road, horse carriages going up and down. I just find that interesting.” The book describes an amusement park in Edgmont Township called Castle Rock, which was located on Rock Ridge Road. Giant to Open at Former Edgmont Genuardi’s

Renovations at the West Chester Pike location are expected to begin this summer.

The former Genuardi’s on West Chester Pike in Edgmont Township will soon become a Giant Food Store. GIANT Food Stores announced Friday it will open a new store at 4855 West Chester Pike in the Marville Shopping Center later this year. A specific open date has not yet been announced. Genuardi’s closed its doors in June 2010. “We are excited to soon serve the vibrant neighborhoods of Edgmont and Newtown Square, offering customers our distinct combination of quality, selection, and savings,” Rick Herring, president, said in a press release. Renovations on the 43,000-square-foot store are expected to begin this summer and will include updates to the interior, according to the release. Wawa Proposal Raises Traffic Concerns in Edgmont

Wawa representatives have presented a sketch proposal for a store and gas station at Landmark Drive and Providence Road.

Wawa representatives recently presented a sketch proposal in a joint meeting with the Edgmont Planning Commission and Township Supervisors. Wawa has presented a concept plan, meaning no action will be taken, for a proposed store and gas station at the Landmark Drive property off of Providence Road near West Chester Pike in Edgmont Township. Traffic was the main point of discussion at the joint meeting, according to the Delaware County Daily Times. Creating a loop road was presented as an option to ease the traffic flow, as currently Providence Road would be the only access point to the Wawa, according to the Delco Times. Wawa reps also suggest the widening of portions of Providence Road.

Blotter: Driver Flees Scene on Foot After Crash

The hit-and-run driver left behind his female passenger who sustained minor injuries in the crash, police say.

The following Middletown and Edgmont township incidents have been supplied by the Pennsylvania State Police-Media Barracks. Anyone with information regarding any of these incidents is asked to call police at 484-840-1000. If arrests or charges are mentioned, they do not indicate guilt or a conviction. Hit-And-Run—Baltimore Pike near Valley Road at about 8:31 p.m. on Jan. 14. A Buick Ranier, driven by a 65-year-old Glen Mills woman, was stopped at the intersection for a red traffic signal when a Dodge Neon reared ended the Buick, according to State Police. Double Edge Sports Bar Hosts Grand Opening

Edgmont Township's newest sports bar and grille will host a grand opening celebration on Saturday.

Double Edge Sports Grille, located at the former Winner's Circle in Marville Shopping Center in Edgmont Township, has been open for business since November but held off on the Grand Opening celebration until after the holiday season. On Saturday, Jan. 12 Double Edge will have food and drink specials and officially be welcomed to the neighborhood. The party will really be all day at the restaurant and bar but specials start around 6:30 p.m. and the band Idlewild South will perform at 8:30 p.m. There will also be giveaways all night and half price appetizers from 8 to 10 p.m. Double Edge's four new owners, from both Delaware and Chester counties, took over the sports-themed bar and grille and renovated and upgraded the facility.
