Biden Hails Middle Class; Philly Firefighters' Union 'Disappointed' With Speech

Vice president addresses national firefighters union at PA Convention Center.

Following Vice President Joe Biden's remarks to the national firefighters union where he praised its members and all middle-class workers, it was what he didn't say that irked the Philadelphia firefighters union president. Local 22 President Bill Gault said he was discouraged with Biden for refraining from taking a position encouraging Mayor Michael Nutter to abide by an arbitrator's decision about the Philadelphia Fire Department. "I'm disappointed that the vice president didn't say: 'Mr. Mayor, you should honor your agreement.' It's a very simple sentence," Gault said. Nutter has until August to appeal an arbiter's decision to put into place a contract for the firefighters, which would award back pay and salary increases. The …

VP Biden: Honor Veterans Every Day

Media's Veterans Day Parade rose to another level of success with the Vice President of the United States speaking to a crowd of hundreds in front of the Delaware County Courthouse Friday afternoon.

Media's 52nd Annual Veterans Day Parade rose to another level of success on Friday with the Vice President of the United States speaking to a crowd of hundreds in front of the Delaware County Courthouse with his wife Dr. Jill Biden and granddaughter Finnegan along side him. The parade was filled with the hallmarks of any patriotic day: Veterans from long-ago wars and some from recent ones marched the streets that were littered with spectators waving Old Glory. After the high school marching bands and American songs being sung, Pennsylvania native and Vice President Joe Biden reminded the hundreds in attendance that Veterans Day should be every day. "I'm honored to be here on Veterans Day in Delaware County to honor 23 million veterans (…

I enjoyed the events today along with Patch's coverage. It was nice to see a large turnout despite the chilly weather. It was difficult to watch some veterans turn their back on Vice President Biden while he spoke. However, today is their day and it is their right to do so. They have done more to earn that right than I have. Thanks to all the veterans. Even if we disagree, I respect your service …   more ›

Blog Wrap: Joe Biden Visits Media

Read our coverage of the vice president's Veterans Day trip.

Veterans Day 2011 in Media was commemorated by Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, visiting Delaware County. After the parade kicked off at 11:11 a.m., both Bidens addressed the crowd. Their speeches were in conjunction with the 52nd-annual Media Veterans Day Parade, which you can read about here. "Unlike other generations of warriors, (recent veterans) have walked into hell not once, but too many of them have done it two, three, four, five times... It's one thing to do it once, it's another to do it time and time and time again," Biden said in front of the courhouse. "This is not Generation X—it's Generation Excellent." Media Patch live blogged the event. If you missed it, feel free to scroll through the reports from …

Biden's Arrival in Media, Likely Motorcade Route

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, will be in attendance at Media's Veterans Day parade on Friday.

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, will be participating in Media's 52nd Annual Veterans Day Parade, which is the state's largest Veterans Day parade, on Friday. Biden is said to be arriving at Philadelphia International Airport around noon on Friday. Security is always tight when a President or Vice President come to town. So temporary road closures between the airport and Media Borough as the Bidens travel through are likely. Although we don't have confirmation on any specific temporary road closures or a route Biden will take. One could assume Interstate 476 and maybe even Baltimore Pike would be taken. Just expect traffic delays around noon on Friday around the airport and in Media Borough. Biden is said to arrive …

For starters, this is not a "Veteran's site." It's a public forum. And perhaps you did not notice those veterans who turned their back to Biden as he spoke today. Furthermore, if you are the father of a veteran, then you of all people should realize that Biden's presence was both irrelevant and trite. Biden has no authority whatsoever to speak about such matters. In fact, there are several …   more ›
