An inspired second-half surge isn't enough to make up for the Lions' big first-half deficit.
Penncrest's girls lacrosse team has shown that they can put together as strong a half of a lacrosse game as anyone. The problem: they need to find a way to do it in both halves of the same game. The 1-6 Lions hosted a strong 4-1 Springfield team on a soggy field on Thursday afternoon, and found themselves playing catch-up almost from the opening draw. Springfield came out fast and strong, and it took them 1:16 to score their first goal. Before five minutes had elapsed in the first half, Penncrest found themselves down 4-0. The Lions and Tigers tried to battle it out through a freezing downpour, but the officials called it quits halfway through.
Instead of team colors, the most dominant feature among the spectators of Thursday's game was umbrellas, and with good reason. The game between Penncrest and Marple Newtown started out misting, and quickly upgraded (or downgraded, depending on how you look at it) to a torrential downpour. The rain made for a sloppy, clumsy game on both sides, which nobody, no matter how good an athlete, could have avoided. Runners were bogged down, outfielders missed pop flies, bases were overthrown and the ball itself might as well have been a round lump of wet soap.
