State Police Make 3 DUI Arrests During Memorial Day Holiday

A Delaware County sobriety check point and increased enforcement resulted in three DUI arrests, 196 speeding citations and 89 warnings last weekend State Police announced.

Troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police-Media Barracks made three DUI arrest and issued 10 traffic citations and 89 warnings during a sobriety checkpoint over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. From May 25 to 28, troopers investigated 14 car crashes, with none being DUI-related crashes, however there was one injury in a crash, according to State Police. Troopers issued 196 speeding citations, 235 other traffic citations and 53 seat belt violations and four people were cited for not properly securing children in car seats during that time frame, according to State Police. Media Memorial Day Parade Honors Veterans, Fallen Troops

The Memorial Day parade and ceremonies in downtown Media drew a large, patriotic crowd to observe the many enthusiastic participants and decorated war veterans.

Delaware County residents of all ages flooded State Street Monday with American flags and red, white, and blue attire as the annual Memorial Day Parade marched through Media underneath the blazing sun. Penncrest High School marching band led the parade, which featured veterans from VFW Post 3460, American Legion Post No. 93, and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 67. Girl Scouts of Troop 5248 and Media Little Leaguers also found their way through the parade, as did a variety of glistening convertibles. At the ceremony in front of Delaware County Courthouse, veteran and longtime Mayor of Media Bob McMahon addressed the crowd and introduced the guest speakers, WWII Navy WAVE veteran Gladys Martin and Iraq War veteran Col. Study: More Red Lights Are Run on Memorial Day

Nationally, the Memorial Day weekend travel period sees the most red-light violations, according to a study.

Though the Greater Philadelphia area bucks the trend, the Memorial Day travel period was named "the most dangerous for intersection safety in 2011," according to a study from the National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR). Across the country, over 26,000 red light violations took place between Friday and Monday during Memorial Day weekend in 2011, nearly 1,000 more violations than during the Fourth of July travel period and almost 7,000 more than during the Christmas travel season. While the Memorial Day numbers might be highest nationally, it is a different story locally. In the Greater Philadelphia area, 892 red-light violations were observed during Memorial Day weekend 2011, the lowest number of violations for any holiday period observed…

Memorial Day Parade to March on Monday

Media Borough's annual Memorial Day Parade hits State Street at 10 a.m. on May 28.

The annual Media Memorial Day Parade will continue its rich tradition of war veterans, bands, and restored convertibles on Monday, May 28. The parade will start at State and Edgmont streets, then head west down State Street to Orange Street. It will make a right onto Orange Street, another right onto Front Street, and finish in front of the Delaware County Courthouse at Veterans Square. Bob Dimond, parade organizer and Executive Director of the Veterans Legacy Project, said the Penncrest High School Marching Band will lead the parade, starting at 10 a.m., and play a melody of songs in front of the courthouse. State Police to Conduct Sobriety Check Point Over Memorial Day Weekend

The Pennsylvania State Police will step up its traffic enforcement and conduct a sobriety check point in Delaware County over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The Pennsylvania State Police-Media Barracks will conduct a sobriety check point within Delaware County during the Memorial Day weekend. The State Police will also step up traffic enforcement over the holiday weekend due to the increased traffic on the roadways. Police will seek out and cite careless and aggressive drivers and arrest any impaired motorists. The State Police remind everyone to wear a seat belt and drive safely. Motorists are also reminded that they are required to slow down and use caution when they see law enforcement or an emergency vehicle stopped alongside the road with its lights flashing. 400k Philadelphians to Hit the Road for Memorial Day Weekend

One in 10 residents of the five county area to travel, says AAA.

Are you leaving Media behind this weekend and heading out of town? If that's the case, you'll miss the annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday and you will be sitting in traffic with thousands of other travelers. AAA-Mid Atlantic estimates that 400,000 residents of the five county area will travel this Memorial Day Weekend, despite gas prices peaking near $4 a gallon. The agency defines traveling as journeys of 50 miles of greater. Of that figure, 88 percent plan to drive to their destination, roughly the same number as last year, says AAA. "Despite near-record-high gas prices this spring, Philadelphia area residents are ready to travel to welcome the summer season this Memorial Day holiday weekend,” said Jenny M.
