Newsweek Ranks Penncrest Among US High Schools

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

On mobile? You can see interactive map here.   Newsweek has ranked Penncrest High School as the #549 high school in the country. In Pennsylvania, Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia received the highest ranking of #56. Locally, Conestoga High School in Berwyn was ranked #124, Harriton High School #219, Radnor High School #255, Strath Haven High School #291, Lower Merion High School #321, Springfield High School #648, Haverford High School #742 and Marple Newtown High School #1096. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. Scott, I encourage you to attend the RTM School Board Committee Meetings. You can hear for yourself how the current members of the school board (including 2 who are up for reelection, Nancy Mackrides and Linda Kinsler-Fox) justify the per pupil expenditures and spin the performance of RTM schools in light of the $20,000 figure. Private industry would come to a different cost/benefit assessment.   more ›

Penncrest High School celebrated its Senior Prom on Saturday. With all the glitz and glam, primping and polishing that comes with Prom, why not show off your fancy self. However, the Senior Prom wasn't the only big Prom event this weekend. As they do each year, many parents put hours and days of hard work in to the AM Prom, after party for the seniors and there was also a Mom Prom at Barnaby's in Aston this weekend. Penncrest Teacher's Death Prompts Memorial Fund

Penncrest High School alumni started the Mal's Memorial Fund in honor of Robert Malkovsky who died in February.

In February, one of Penncrest's favorites passed away unexpectedly after battling cancer. Physics teacher Robert Malkovsky, or Mr. Mal, taught at Penncrest since 1989. Penncrest alumni started Mal's Memorial Fund with the idea of a boy and a girl from the school to receive $1,000 to pursue an interest in science every year, according to philly.com. The goal is to raise $50,000 to create the endowed scholarship, according to philly.com. As of April 25, donations had reached $47,850. "If he knew about it, it would have been the most important thing he contributed," Malkovsky's youngest sister, Betsy Juhasz told philly.com, "because he was all about the kids." Penncrest U.S. News and World Report Scores

See how Penncrest fared in the U.S. News and World Report’s list of 2013’s Best High Schools.

U.S. News and World Report recently released its 2013 Best High Schools list. Several Philadelphia-area high schools—including Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Radnor High School in Radnor, Lower Merion High School in Lower Merion and Great Valley High School in Malvern—made the list. Penncrest High School did not rank within the "Best Of" list but did score well in the report's college readiness index. U.S. News and World Report looked at more than 21,000 public schools across the country, according to its website, and more than 150 schools from Pennsylvania made the list. Penncrest Senior Heads to Temple this Fall

Proud parents (and students) can get the word out whenever they want, via Media Patch's homepage and daily email newsletter.

  A Penncrest High School senior has committed to Temple University this fall. Nicole Carl, of the Class of 2013, will pursue a degree in physical therapy at Temple University.   If your child is finishing high school and has chosen a college, maybe even a major, announce it on Media Patch. Penncrest Swimmers Beat School Records

Three Penncrest swimmers were recently honored by the Rose Tree Media Board of School Directors.

The Penncrest boys and girls swim teams were recently honored at the Rose Tree Media Board of School Directors meeting. Penncrest Swimming State Qualifier Mary Kate Boylan placed 24th in the State Championship at Bucknell in the 50 Free with a time of 24.7 seconds, according to Director of Athletics Chip Olinger. Boylan, a junior, took a fourth place medal in the 50 Free at the District Championship with a Penncrest record time of 24.43 seconds, according to Olinger. Boylan earned a gold medal for both the 50 Free and 100 free at the Central League Championships. Penncrest Swimming State Qualifier Phil Nawn placed 24th in the IM and 17th in the 500 Free with a Penncrest record of 4:42.02 at the State Championship, according to Olinger. …

Penncrest Boosters Donate Baseball Fence

The Rose Tree Media Board of School Directors accepts a donation from the Penncrest High School Boosters.

  The Rose Tree Media Board of School Directors recently accepted a donation from the Penncrest High School Boosters. The Boosters donated an Enduro baseball fence for the varsity baseball field in the amount of $2,957.70. The board accepted the donation unanimously at the March 21 meeting.

Penncrest Wrestler Takes Central League with 105 Career Wins

Joe Gartland earned a silver medal in the 170-pound weight class at the State Championship.

A Penncrest senior wrestler was recently honored at the Rose Tree Media Board of School Directors meeting. Joe Gartland earned a silver medal—the highest ever for a Penncrest wrestler—in the 170-pound weight class at the State Championship in Hershey, according to Director of Athletics Chip Olinger. Gartland, who was named the Delaware County Daily Times Wrestler of the Year, earned his 100th career win in the District Championship match and finished his high school wrestling career second in career wins with 105, according to Olinger. In the post season, Gartland won the Central League Tournament, District Tournament and finished second in the Regional Tournament losing 2-1, according to Olinger. Penncrest Boys Track Place 5th at State Championship

Penncrest High School's boys indoor track 4x800 relay team was recently honored.

The Penncrest boys indoor track 4x800 relay team was recently honored at the Rose Tree Media Board of School Directors meeting. The team—Nick Angelina, Evan Emanuel, Soham Kamat and Colin Meyers—placed fifth at the State Championship with a time of 8:02.16, according to Director of Athletics Chip Olinger. Emanuel and Kamat were also on the 4x800 relay that won the Kevin Dare Invitational at Pennsylvania State University and Angelina, Emanuel and Kamat were on the 4x800 relay that finished second in the Burdette Classic, according to Olinger. Also, the 4x400 relay team—Dion Durnell, Evan Emanuel, Sohom Kamat and Colin Myers—finished 13th in the State Championship.
