Liquor Stores: Voters Support Privatization

Pennsylvania’s governor announces his plan to privatize liquor sales and a poll shows voters favor privatization. What do you think?

The idea of privatizing Pennsylvania’s liquor stores is not new. The majority of voters support the idea, according to a Franklin & Marshall College Poll. Of those polled, 34 percent strongly supported and 19 percent somewhat supported privatization, while 10 percent somewhat opposed and 24 percent strongly opposed. Historic data shows an interesting swing in support. The combined support of both strongly and somewhat was 53 percent in this February 2012 poll and in a June 2002 poll, the combines support was 55 percent, but the breakdown was different. In 2012, 34 percent strongly supported privatization, which is down from 42 percent in 2002. In 2012, 19 percent somewhat supported privatization, which is up from 13 percent in 2002. Gov. …

PLCB Double Billed Customers

Check your credit card bill if you bought alcohol in Pennsylvania around Thanksgiving.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board reports that it double billed customers who used credit to make purchases over the Thanksgiving holiday. The PLCB says in a release that they became aware Feb. 28 of the duplicate billings on purchases made from Nov. 23 (Wednesday) to Nov. 28 (Monday). The error impacted in-store purchases, and not online purchases, according to the PLCB statement. As of March 1, the PLCB says duplicate billings were reversed. PLCB says that the credit could take three to 10 days to appear after being processed by the banking institution. “The Liquor Control Board sincerely apologizes for the error and any inconvenience this may have caused its customers.” -PLCB Statement Customers who had a duplicate billing and have …

Find Local Wine and Spirits With New iPhone App

PA Liquor Control Board launches searchable app.

Need some wine, but unfamiliar with the area? The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board released an app for iPhone users that brings Fine Wine & Good Spirits to your pocket. In the greater Media area, residents probably have a good working knowledge that state stores are located near the Regal movie theater in Edgmont Township or on Baltimore Avenue in Media Borough. However, the searchable features from the app will tell you there are nearby shops at 1991 Sproul Road in Broomall, 3486 Concord Road in Aston and 5035 Township Line Road in Drexel Hill. Better yet, the app gives you the ability to call those stores directly or map directions to get there. The app, which is free and available on iTunes for those older than 17, also includes:  …

Wine and Spirit Prices to Increase Statewide

More than 300 products will see increases—the first in 18 months.

A buck here, 50 cents there—across the board prices will increase for 313 wine and liquor products in Pennsylvania, with some starting Feb. 1. The state's Liquor Control Board approved the rate hike at all Pennsylvania wine and spirit shops for the first time in 18 months, according to numerous media reports. The hike is rolled out over February and March. Impacting all state stores, including the shop on Baltimore Avenue, the increase was spurred on by vendor pressure. "We couldn't continue to turn down the vendors’ requests for price increases, because we would risk losing the opportunity to carry (their) products," PLCB member P.J. Stapleton said to the PA Independent. Vendors are allowed to request price increases four times a year, he…
