Rep. Thomas Killion announces that Rose Tree Media School District has been awarded a transportation grant to convert its bus fleet to compressed natural gas.
Rose Tree Media School District is the recipient of the Natural Gas Vehicle Development Program grant administered by the Department of Environmental Protection to begin upgrading the district’s school bus fleet to natural gas vehicles in the amount of $499,994. Rep. Thomas Killion (R-Delaware/Chester) announced Thursday that the district has been awarded the transportation grant to convert its bus fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG). The transportation grant initiative was included in Act 13, legislation signed into law last year that authorized impact fees for natural gas drilling in the Commonwealth. The Rose Tree Media School Board proposed the 2013-2014 general fund budget at a special meeting on April 9. The final budget adoption is expected to take place at the May 23 meeting. If approved, the proposed $84,335,989 budget would bring a tax increase of 1.7 percent for a millage rate of 22.9913, according to the April 9 meeting minutes. A 1.7 percent increase equates to an annual increase of $77 for the average home assessment of $204,941, according to RTM Director of Management Services Grace Eves. The Rose Tree Media School District school year calendar has been updated due to the year's earlier weather.
The Rose Tree Media Board of School Directors approved an update to the district's school year calendar at its meeting Thursday. The district's last day of school is now Monday, June 17. The original calendar marked the last day as June 18 for students. The change is due to the fact that the district only used two "snow" days during Hurricane Sandy in October, according to the district website. Early dismissal times will remain the same for the elementary and middle schools now on June 17. Penncrest underclassmen exam schedule will now be on Thursday and Friday, June 13 and 14, with Monday, June 17 as a make-up day, according to the district website. The Rose Tree Media Board of School Directors accepts a donation from the Penncrest High School Boosters.
The Rose Tree Media Board of School Directors recently accepted a donation from the Penncrest High School Boosters. The Boosters donated an Enduro baseball fence for the varsity baseball field in the amount of $2,957.70. The board accepted the donation unanimously at the March 21 meeting.

A teacher from each of the six district schools has been nominated for the state honor.
Six teachers from the Rose Tree Media School District have been nominated for Pennsylvania's Teacher of the Year. Each was honored at the March 21 legislative meeting. "It's amazing what good teachers can do for a district, and how kids respond to these great teachers that we have, and obviously the state is now recognizing this fact." Board of School Directors President John Hanna said. "I wish you all the best of luck in the ongoing competition." The finalists and then winner will be announced later this year. The state’s Teacher of the Year, will be Pennsylvania’s nominee for National Teacher of the Year. Two district teachers were finalist for the 2013 Teacher for Year. Rose Tree Media Board of School Directors recently approved Penncrest's Commencement ceremony at Villanova University.
The Rose Tree Media Board of School Directors recently approved a contract with Villanova University for the purpose of the high school's graduation. The cost to rent Villanova's Pavillon and Field House for Penncrest's 2013 graduation ceremony is $11,375, according to the license agreement. The cost includes the facility license fee and all expenses associated with the event, including custodial, police, Villanova public safety, electrician, staging, ticket takers, ushers and other related items. In comparison, last year's district cost was $10,875 and Marple Newtown School District will pay Villanova $10,775 for its high school graduation. Penncrest's graduation is set for June 6.

The Springton Lake Middle School principal was placed on administrative leave in October yet the question of whether he continues to receive his salary, goes unanswered.
Springton Lake Middle School Principal Dr. Troy Czukoski was placed on administrative leave in October due to a federal investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Postal Service. Rose Tree Media School District Superintendent James Wigo said the investigation remains sealed by federal officials and no new information has been released. Czukoski has not been charged with any crime. Ralph Harrison, who was formerly assistant principal of Penncrest High School, was appointed by the Rose Tree Media School Board as Springton Lake's acting principal as of Jan. 1. Rose Tree Elementary School's new principal brings global experience to the role with almost 20 years in the education industry and having taught in the U.S. and South Africa.
Rose Tree Elementary School's new principal has only sat at her new desk for about two weeks but she is bringing plenty of experience and culture to the position. "I've been really lucky because I've had an interesting journey," Principal Jenny Robinson says. Robinson was born and raised in South Africa, where she began her teaching career. She taught high school science in an inner city school towards the end of apartheid, before heading to Canada in the late 80s, where she changed direction and studied business. After having spent about two years in Canada, Robinson took a break from work life to raise her two daughters and began her United States journey. She lived in Texas, Colorado, San Francisco and then decided on Pennsylvania as …

Unfortunately, the annual raises have outpaced the cost of living so it keeps adding up. Plus, the 70% of us who don't utilize the schools are tired if funding those who do. If funds were managed better, it may not be a big deal but when we read things like the District getting into the natural gas industry for minimal return on investment, it tends to raise the hair on our necks.
