Teacher Spotlight: Media Elementary's Karen Bellamy

This Art teacher hopes her students have a lifetime of art appreciation.

Teacher Spotlight is where we will feature a local teacher who deserves recognition. Teachers give a lot to their students, schools and studies and we'd like to recognize them and say a simple, thank you, for all that they do.

In coming weeks, we're going to meet some of Media Elementary School's newest teachers. This teacher loves that she is able to combine her two passions of art and learning by being an Art teacher.

Years in the industry: 14 Years, first year at Media Elementary

Teaching History:

Bellamy taught Art in the Upper Darby School District for 13 years prior to coming to Media Elementary. She graduated from Rosemont College and has a Masters in Education from Arcadia University.

Why did you become a teacher:

I wanted to combine my two passions of art and working with children. And to provide them with an opportunity to be exposed to the arts, especially at an early age. So hopefully they will have a life long love for art.

What do you like most about your job:

There are always opportunities to learn and grow. Painting is probably my favorite but I love to dabble in all types of media.

What do you hope your students get out of your classes:

I hope they will develop critical thinking skills and a love and appreciation for the arts. I hope they gain a better understanding of themselves and a means to express themselves.

If you could change anything about education, what would it be:

I would love for every child to have the best possible education and not have anything limit them in any way.

What do you like best about your current school:

I love that it's a child-centered, rigorous learning environment with very caring staff members and parents who are committed to their children's education.
