Hackett Welcomes House Select Committee on School Safety, Security to Delaware County

Rep. Joe Hackett, R-161, hosted House Select Committee on School Safety for second hearing on safety & security in PA schools Thurs. at Sun Valley High School.

The state’s House Select Committee on School Safety hosted a hearing on safety and security at Pennsylvania’s schools Thursday at Sun Valley High School.Rep. Joe Hackett (R-Delaware) welcomed the House Select Committee on School Safety and Security, led by Reps. Gary Day (R-Berks/Lehigh) and Cherelle Parker (D-Philadelphia), for the second in a series of public meetings to carefully develop and examine policies that enhance safety in schools across Pennsylvania.

One of the goals of the committee is to hear from educators, law enforcement and others from around the state in order to craft the best possible recommendations.

Hackett said that the committee’s creation and the hearing’s timing were especially relevant in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook, Conn., shooting in which 27 people, including 20 children and six school employees, were killed. It is important, he said, to gather information from those involved in school security and not let the emotions felt after the tremendous loss of life cloud their judgment.

"While the safety of our children should be at the center of this debate, we must also make sure that what we do is in the best interest of our educators and communities" said Hackett.
